Are the reason why people live in council/housing association propertys because they all have low income?
I got told that people who live in council houses is because they have low income coming in? But do some people choose to live in council/housing association because they would prefer to rent than buy a house?
Additional Details
Ok thankyou all, im just trying to state a fact as i live in housing association and people who know me think just because i rent, they think i have no money, cant afford nothing (doll doser), we work. our home is nice inside. we just prefure to rent, it gives us time to save up, and then have our own money to put towards buying the property when we decide to

Both reasons.

i know of cases in which people start out as low income makers and so have no choice but to live in the council houses. however, many remain to stay since they recognize the potential to increase disposable income and ability to invest and move up the economic ladder faster by remaining with such low rent.

sometimes, it's a matter of being unable to find property that they can afford to buy even though they can afford to rent more expensive places.

It is usually people on low income who are renting these properties. To qualify for a Council house, you are awarded points. These points are rated for certain things.
1 Do you have to share a bathroom
2 Have you central Heating
3Are you living in over crowded accomodation, Etc.
For each question you answer, and are awarded points. Then if you have enough points to qualify, you are given a Council house if one is available. If not, you have to wait until one is available.

I think there are many factors. I would say that the majority are not in the income bracket that can afford a mortgage (and their numbers may increase with the economic downtown). This does not mean, however, that they are on the bread-line. For some, it may be safer to rent - more protection and the bank can't re-posess your house - but I doubt whether many are driving around in BMWs either.

As you say some people don't want the responsibly of owning and maintaining their own property another reason for renting is the fact that they are unable to get a mortgage not because they have low income but just because the bank or whoever decide they can't have a loan.

sea_blonde
maybe they cannot buy. If the income is low, how would they be able to save enuf to put up a down payment? If maybe the money is all they can do to live?

Certain criteria has to be met in order for people to qualify for council/housing properties. Example, income, number of people in family. There are gads of people who live in apartments or houses and pay rent and make lots of money. They don’t want to have to worry about the upkeep of the property or pay taxes and insurance on it.

The advantage is, if anything goes wrong e.g. boiler you don't have to pay.

any one who is in rental, any rental including private should and can be on the housing list, this is the government can use this for statistics, it also helps indicate property which may need to be built of allocated as social houseing via large companies along with an idea of the local social climate.

we are the only contry who put such social status on owning your house, this can be seen by banks and peolple stupidly lending/borrowing upto 6 times their income (hence the mess we are in now).

many years ago lots of people lived in council.housing *** propertyis, then maggiw t said we should own our own houses. sold some council propertys and didnt re build.

i live in h/a i have a good job and although looking at an investment potential, i at my heart do not believe in owning my own property.

i have a good job and my house is well 'done out' i recently exchanged to a larger house which was a mess, in 3 mths i had done it out top to bottom, costing around 10k if i owned i could not have done this.

we also go away on holiday and weekends quite a bit, my 5th hol this year is approaching, again if i owned i could not do this.

my hoover and washing machine packed up at the same time, so bought new, again i would not have been able to do this with interest rates on the rise.

i guess what you have to ask is are you working to live or living to work?

what does 'life' mean to you.

dont get me wrong if i could pick the house up and drop it some where else i would like were i was before, my street has very few houses whih are still 'council' however some neighbours are problematic, i believe you can get this any where. but you can complain about tenants, you cant home owners.

there are many people who are not in the fortunate positions as people like me, but we should not tar them with the same brush just because they live on an estate.

as long as you safe, loved and happy that is all that matters, if people pass judgment then you should question where this comes from.its sounds like snobbery

social housing enables families on low incomes to have a slightly better quality of life, look at other countries and you will find larger families in much smaller housing.

for a country so small we have big opinions!

It's usually because they're on a low income but some people prefer to live in council/housing association homes to save money and because they're satisfied with them.

I might be wrong, but I believe to qualify for council housing you have to be below a certain income bracket. But I couldn't tell you what it is.

kate
Yes, many different people live in council properties. It's harder to get one however because you're able to rent privately if you're on a higher income. Priority is for vulnerable couples/children and people on low income.

fritya56
good luck mate don't let narrow minded people put you down , especially the semi-detached thieving scum , time wasting drunks suffering from petty snobbery name dropping about kitchen design , I'm with you . Good luck to you . good and bad in all walks of life , if I told you my position you'd laugh your balls off .

Everyday's the same again...
Nope - plenty of people register for council housing, regardless of income, working status, family size etc. It's not all dole dossing single moms aged 18 as per the stereotype.

Edit: actually, I guess it depends on what you consider to be a low income. I am on a decent wage, but I still couldn't afford to buy at the moment. Our housing app doesn't ask for wages - and I don't know any that do, so it would be difficult to use "low income" as a reason to house someone over another applicant.

I rent a house because I can't afford to get a mortgage. I work two jobs and still cannot afford it. If I had a choice (and money) I would buy, but its just simply not possible untill I earn better money

I think it is a pre requisite for a person to prove his/her low income to get to live in rent controlled housing.
