Are there many apartments for rent during winter months?
My lease is up the last day of January..but do you think there are many apartments for rent during winter? I'm finding all types of great apartments online right now but I'm scared by January there won't be much available, due to the snow and cold.

Would I be better off waiting till my lease is up or break my lease and move during the summer?
Additional Details
I'm in illinois.. and I'm asking this because I heard landlords dont usually rent out in winter

Where are you, your city and state. No one can help you without knowing this.

That would depend on how much you'd have to pay to get out of your current lease. If you just leave, your credit rating will drop big time and no one else will want to rent to you.

If you are month to month, just give them 30 days notice and move on. Otherwise it's usually too expensive to break a lease.

Doctor Deth
people move in and out of apts all year round - if they have empty apartments, of course they will want a paying tenant in them - any time of the year

Tigg
Of course there are. Why would you break your lease, take the chance of being evicted, sued and ruining your credit.

I'm failing to see a connection between the season and rental availability, other than perhaps that in many areas, landlords are not allowed to evict people during the winter.
Granted, many people prefer not to move during the winter because the weather can be unpredictable and messy, and add to the burden of moving.
Did you have a problem finding the apartment you're in now? After all, you did it in winter...

S.K.
There's no shortage due to winter. People have to live somewhere.

Breaking your lease is usually a bad idea, since you're legally obligated to pay all the rent even if you're not there. That's why you have a lease.

What's available in January will depend on whatever seasonal population shifts there are where you live. Usually the biggest vacancy rates are in spring and summer, but in virtually every place I've ever lived, there were apartments available all year long.
