I know that you could build a log home for about $5000 if you move to some place in the woods
there are a lot of books on how to build one and there are some websites that offer courses on how to build one like this one

50 grand or no, but closing costs more then a "couple grand", you will not be buying anything legal to be on for that. |

Yes, but they are in some really decrepit and poor areas like inner city of Cleveland. I looked in to real estate in Youngstown, Ohio (I live in San Diego and I read how the housing in Youngstown is the most reasonable in the US) and there were actually homes that were just a few thousand dollars. But, most looked like they were on the verge of being condemned. |

If you move to a small rural area you can actually take advantage of the poor economy and an anxious seller will surely have a really nice mobile home that are quite nice. I have seen the ones that no longer look like a total mobile, more like a house. |

I once had a house under contract in Baltimore MD for $7000. I know investors there who purchased townhomes for $500. It is possible. You will not find these houses on the multiple list with RE agents generally. But they are out there. Expect that they will need a lot of work, but every market is different. |

It depends on where you live. If you go on ebay you can find houses for under $10,000 in certain states like Michigan, Ohio, etc. But not much luck in bigger cities and places you'd actually want to live. |
