Mallory | Are utilities part of the rent? |
Wanting to move out of the house and I was wondering about rent and utilities. I am looking at a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment in florida. The rent is 700 and it doesn't say anything about the utilities, do you think they are extra or included? Going to meet with the apartment place in a few days but I wanted to see what you guys think. How much do you think utilities will be if they are extra?
Thanks!! |

If utilities are not listed in the rental agreement as being included in the rent, then you will definitely have to pay them separately. Just ask the rental agent or landlord to estimate how much they will be, and s/he should be able to tell you. |

Utilities are normally seperate from the rent. If it doesn't say they are included they are not. Plan on at least $250 a month. |

Usually utilities aren't included. Some apts include water, but that is usually it. Electric would probably be at least $150 per month (more in the summer and less in the winter). Water is usually cheap, maybe $15-$25 per month. I've never had an apt that had gas, but if so, it would probably be similar to the cost of water (and would make you electric cheaper). Occasionally you'll find a place that includes cable and/or internet, so ask about that. |

just ask. . .usually if they don't mention they are paid, you will pay for them. Beware of places without insulation or caulk around windows. Look to see if anyone has anything in the windows to block the sun. Look at what type of windows. You can ask management what the average utilities are for that size apartment and you can later go knock on a neighbor's door and ask them. Just look around at how well kept everything is and older apartments may cost you a little more-especially if they are not excellently kept. You can ask about the efficiency rating of the water heater, a/c, etc. And consider where the afternoon sun is in regard to your apartment. I have apartments and the afternoon sun beats a brick wall on the back all afternoon and the second floor really heats up. And then a tenant dug up all the shrubs that shaded the back of the house. . .could have killed them. . .There are a lot of ways to keep your utilities down that you can learn. Don't over spend so that you have lots of $ left to live on and enjoy life and remember that things happen and you need a slush fund so you are not caught short. Lots of luck. OH and don't forget to find out about deposits for the utilities. Just call them and ask what they are. |

unless it's advertised as utilities included, they're usually NOT
esp with air conditioning in FL, you could call the Electric company & find out how much they've been running for that address, & if you can, select the GREEN option on your electric bill, they use more envirement friendly means for a few extra dollars, $2 per $100 a month here in Indy |

sometimes you have to pay extra for utilities. but check with your landlord about lt before you move in |

They are NOT included unless stated and then so which ones. When Rent includes utilities, typically that means water and garbage, but can and does vary. If they are run separately they can run as high as $200. in the winter....depends on gas/elect/wood....contact your local energy provider and ask about the past 3 or 6 months bills.... to get an average. |
