As a renter, do I pay for air filters or the landlord?

Check with your landlord, and read your lease. Sometimes these things are listed in the lease, sometimes they aren't. Your landlord can give you the correct answer if it's not in the lease.

Unless your rental agreement says the landlord pays for air filters, you do.

You Do!

I always bought my own when I was a renter, that way I knew when the filter got changed.

Unless it is stated in your lease agreement then you would pay for the filter because you are using the air by living in the space.

Our landlord buys them for us and we put them in. We live in a very small building. It might be different in complexes over 25 units.

I own multiple units and have never paid for furnace filters, if that is what you mean. The furnaces are inspected annually by a HVAC firm for safety reasons, and the tenants have always taken care of the filters.

they cost a buck, who cares.

we (the "landlord" ((i hate that term)). change the filter at our expense two time a year (and this is a secret so don't tell anyone lol) it is mainly to see how well kept up the apartment is, or if there are any conditions that need to be repaired that the resident fails to report (you would be surprised to see some of the conditions that some people will live in without reporting it), or of any illegal activities. my company will always give at least a 48 hour notice of when we do filter changes and give them a number to call if they have a problem with it. but we always inspect the unit. it belongs to the company, not the resident, so it will be inspected.
as in the case of in-between filter changes it is up to you to pay the cost as well as light bulbs in fixtures that belong to the company. we will replace odd sized filters and florescent bulbs.
but around here all you have to do is talk to the passing maintenance person and he/she will supply you with what you want.

I have always paid for them myself however, I have heard of landlords buying them to make sure they get changed. It is really something that you are responsible for if it was not put in writing otherwise.

I know it may not be what you want to hear but I am 35 now and rented for many years. Good luck!

usually landlord but check your contract.

From experience, I know that occasionally the landlord will come and change the filter for you. Filters aren't that expensive, you should buy them yourself and change them.

I am pretty sure that unless the lease says otherwise your landlord is resposable for house mantanance (air filters), my landlord pays for my filters and repairs things around the house for free.

aisling b
If you really need them due to Health and safety than the Land lord needs to pay.Better off telling Land lord you need them so he can buy the ones he can afford and receive warranty with them.
If the Land lord thinks you don't need them he will not give you money for them.
Check terms and conditions on Contract if you have 1.
Best of Luck

llselva4
Pay for them and then send the bill to the landlord.
