Baby on the way, housing?
we are currently living in a one bedroom flat with our 3 year old daughter, we have another baby on the way which is not due until the end of july. does anybody know when we can apply for a bigger council property as claerly a one bedroom flat is not likely to be able to accomadate us all comfortably, both myself and my partner work full time we are not scrongers and do not expect anything from the goverment we pay in full for everything council tax rent etc, we also do not think just because we are havin a babby we are nessasarily entiled to larger accomadation, i am just wondering as we are considering renting privatly if we cannot get anywhere larger fromt he council, would be gratefull for any answers, thanks

there is always one who has to make some kind of sarcastic comment isnt there, yes we can afford to pay for private housing but that is not likely to leave us money for much else is it, just because we are doing our upmost to support our own family does not mean we should not live in council property, we work hard for everything we have and its people who canot be bother to get off the bum who should get nothing!!

Contact your council now. The sooner you are on the list the better.

Edit - You're right to want a council property. I rent from a housing assoc & my rent is £360 a month for a 3 bed house. A private rental in my area is roughly £750 a month. So those who are critisizing you should wind their necks in. Good luck, I hope you get somewhere soon. ☺

Hi
I have a friend in the same situation as you, her partner works full time etc. They have one child of 2 years and another due in a few months. She informed the housing authority as soon as she new she was pregnant and they have told her the only way she will get a larger place is if she has a daughter but if she has another boy the waiting list is 3 years. They have a 1 bed flat.
The main reason in this area is the amount of people from abroad being able to jump the Que as they have several children, before anyone starts slagging me off for that comment, that is actually what she was told by the housing authority.

lunah_c
The councils opinion is that two children can share a bedroom with parents until the age of 11. So I am afraid you might have a long wait.
I would honestly go for private. If you are both working you will have plenty of choice, and most likley ge a better area than if housed by the council.
You could put your name down on their list anyway but they don't have the properties anymore as they keep selling them off so don't rely on it. If you do get lucky it will most likley be a flat and to be honest a house with garden is better for kids.

LadyMoonlight!!
You're lucky you can get council housing! The council refuse to house us (we'd be waiting 10+ years or more) and we're paying £400 a month for our house out a salary of £800! We desperately need cheaper housing (our house also has damp problems which we cannot afford to fix) but the council claims there is a "shortage" of social housing - they seem perfectly able to house immigrants and asylum seekers though.

You can apply now...contact them to inform them you have another on the way...but it is no garauntee of another property quickly.

cleverbutdumb
hiya, you should be able to apply now. at least then u are on the list. its a crap situation to be in. i was in it now i have to move again! ive got 3 little ones sharing one room.
we are not scroungers either, we simply cannot afford to buy a house yet.
good luck and get that form in quick!
xx

Just go to the housing department at your local council and get your name on the housing list. As soon as one comes available you'll get it. Get your name down now and hopefully you'll get housed by the time the baby comes

If you have been living in your flat for more than 12 months, you can apply to go on the transfer list.
You are also entitled to swap your home with another social tenant anywhere in the country.
The local housing office should have the home swap registers, if not they will be kept at the town hall. Read them.
As people get older and their families move away, they want to move into smaller accommodation. I found an exchange for a family in your situation with an elderly lady who wanted a small flat instead of a 3 bed house.
Try advertising in the local housing office and in the local shops of the area that you want to live in. You may be pleasantly surprised at the response.

you need to contact you council now, provide them with a letter from the midwife stating you are pregnant and make sure it includes the due date and signiture of the midwife along with a stamp/name and address of where the midwife is based.
i spoke to my friend who has a 2 bed house with our local council and shes just had a new baby so there are now 2 kids and 2 adults and she was told she is allowed up to a 3 bed house and was put on the list once she gave them notice.
my sister in law is with another council who has said she is only entitled to a 2 bed property until the children are 10 (she has 1 boy and 1 girl. it is illegal to keep children of different sexs in the same room after this age apparently) so i think it depends on where you are. however as you only have a 1 bed property i would see this as over crowding so i cant see why they would make you stay there.

you may also find that the council can help you rent privately by giving you housing benefit but that depends on rent amount, income etc you might find info of this on your councils website.some councils also do a deposit scheme where they will pay the deposit for the rented house or act as your garantee so that the people know they wont be out of pocket if you were to do a runner etc. i think only certain places accept that however.

if you can afford to pay privately then I am unsure why the council is already providing you with a flat.
