Cupid | Bad experience with a realtor? |
I sold a home in early 2007.. but had a terrible realtor.. she first listed my home in 2006.. made bad judgement and didn't do her homework on offers.. cost me $40k in profit and was very unthorough with everything. She even spelled my name wrong on a transaction document.. just wondering if anyone has had any bad, unsavvy realtors they have worked with? What happened and what would you do differently next time you choose one? Thanks. Additional Details Adding.. this realtor was referred by a dear friend.. that is the unfortunate part. It made things rather awkward for my dear friend and myself.. she felt horrible. |

As with any profession, you'll always have a few bad apples. I do want to say that being full time or part time makes no difference if the agent does a good job. When working with a part-time agent you may be their only client at the time!
The best thing to do is talk to a few agents from different brokers to find out about their marketing plans and what they (and their office!) provides.
I bought my home before becoming a Realtor and I worked with a very good agent. The first home I made an offer on was a fiasco. The seller's agent wouldn't return my agent's calls or provide the info we needed. Eventually that entire deal fell through, but I found the house I am in now shortly after. Had my agent not been as helpful I wouldhave been easily frustrated by the experience and likely waited to search again! |

Interview several next time. Don't make your decision to quickly. See who returns your calls and has a genuine interest in your happiness. |

To the person below: not all real estate agents and brokers are scam artists - shame on you. Now are some of them inexperienced or not very thorough, yes but scam artists . . . all of them . . . NO.
I'd like to help with your question but really your allegations of pretty vague. You do have certain recourse opportunities if your complaints are legit. Can you elaborate.
How did your agent cost you $40,000? It looks to me like your home was on the market for a fair while which means it was overpriced to start with. Also the market is most areas dropped from 06 to 07.
What do you think she did wrong on the offers? and what judgments were you unhappy about? Misspelling your name doesn't seem like a criminal matter to me - a maybe a little sloppy - but I doubt it caused any real problems other than the insult you felt.
Can you be more clear in your allegations and maybe we can come up with some solutions.
Do interview more than one in the future and get some references from previous clients - if they don't have any or don't want to give them, that tells you all you need to know. |

Interview several local agents that know your community and get references and most importantly check the references. Many people get references and fail to check them. Also check with the licensing agency to determine if any complaints are on file for the specific agent you want to select. |

You have to do your homework. Interview three agents. Ask friends for referrals. There are lots of articles on the www about finding a good agent. |

Sometimes people recommend that you have two Realtors and also interview them. If you see one of your Realtors making mistakes at the beginning get rid of that person. Now the second one is like a back up Realtor. A good Realtor will contact you constantly. |

To become a REALTOR all you have to do is pass a state test. Many people do this, unfortunately many are inexperienced and do it part time and are content if they sell a house every other month. There are just as many professional full time REALTORS out there. Definitely interview several before hiring one. Find out if they are FULL TIME or part time, how long their broker has been in business and ask if they represent the buyer, seller, or both. You want someone who is working for you and not just the sale. |

I would never use an agent. you should always sell privately.
My bad experience happened when this flashy agent rocked up to my place with a bag full of promises. But weeks went on and still no enquiries. So I had to hassle her to get things moving. I got a friend to call her and say they were interested in my property and she told them that it could be under contract and she had some others they could look at?then I rang her posing as some one else and so much for customer service, let alone she didnt recognise me but she told me she had a few better to look at.... All were more expensive and I know one had been for sale for ages and was overpriced.
When my wife phoned her to complain she said she had had no enquiries buut would bring around some people that day. Which she did but they werent even interested in buying in our area!! it was just something they could compare what they were looking for.
We basically waited out our 90 Day contract and sold it ourself on a private sale website. |
