Bad feeling about apartment complex...?
My boyfriend and I's lease is up in two months, we've been looking for apartments and found one we both really like but the more I think about it I have worse feelings about it. Their Phase 2 One bedroom apartment is anywhere from $630 to 650 without a special. Every apartment is on a man-made lake, all utilities are included except for electric and cable (either their cable or Direct), and the layout is great. The only thing is I went on a site called apartmentratings.com and everyone on the site say it's a hell hole. The thing I keep thinking about is they say a lot about flooding and water problems and when we went and looked at the apartments I saw water damage in two of the four apartments we looked at. I said something about it and the manager said that it happens in the older buildings. I just keep getting a really bad feeling about these apartments, what should I do, try it, or leave it, they are called The Harbours Apartments in Clinton Township, MI... I don't know what to do.

Leave it. If the landlord won't repair obvious problems like that, they probably aren't maintaining the rest, either. The last thing you need is a flooded apartment, or worse, one that burns down because it hasn't had the wiring, appliances, etc. maintained.

Your bad feeling is your warning to watch out! It's always a good idea to listen to this little voice inside you, it's rarely wrong!

i would leave it....obvisiously the landlord knows that flooding occurs in some of the apts. he's probably another landlord who makes a living off of others and dont care about the apt complex.

I think you'd be better off with a normal place..

You should pass. Trust your instincts and research. Sounds like the lakes were put in as catch basins for an area that already flooded before building. Even if you have renters insurance, flooding problems are a major headache. If it happens, you'll have to move out while things are renovated. Unless your lease says otherwise, you may still have to pay while living elsewhere during repairs. Just the hassle of having to replace your damaged items is not worth the risk. Additionally it could happen while you are out of town, and you'd have no chance to try and protect your belongings before it happened. Besides, living on a lake can be a headache in itself, especially if it's stagnant, smelly, or buggy at certain times of the year.

If you got a bad feeling about it, don't live there. You don't want to be stuck with a lease to a terrible apartment knowing before hand that you would probably have problems. You don't want to risk the chance of water damage with all your stuff. Look around and find a place that you feel good about and don't have to worry about your belongings. Good job on searching more info on the place before hand.

Then don't live there. Just don't. You have a bit of time yet. Keep looking.

Even if you don' t live where there's water damage, you may still be affected by flooding problems. And if you're in MI, mosquitos from standing water. Yech.

Trust your gut feeling. Their are always apartments for rent, people looking for renters, and places that you will feel better about. Trust your gut instinct.

I would not rent there. Listen to the people that have lived their before. It seems like they don't really take care of the people that rent from them. I would keep on looking. When you find the right place to live you will know. Good luck

Sounds like you should look for a different place.
