Breaking into an "abandoned" house?
There is this house that I am completely in love with. It's Victorian style house that has been abandoned. On the Outside it looks like it needs a lot of work but my husband and I are interested in buying it. We have thought about "breaking in" to look inside but we're afraid we'd get in trouble with the cops. If we explained the situation that we're looking to buy it would they accept that? Or what are some means to find out who owns the house?
Additional Details
I guess I should add that it's in a lot completely all by itself. We've looked in through some windows and it's empty. I've had my eye on it for about 2 years now, it's just that now we're finally getting the opportunity to look into it. Thanks though, I've gotten some great responses.

Five Stars Mortgage
If this house is in the U.S., you can always look up the owner of the house through your counties property appraiser office. Do some looking on the web. You can find detailed information about the sales history and house features by looking up by parcel number, street address, or owner name.

You definately don't want to break into the house. The police will not accept your answer as a reason for breaking and entering a property you do not own. It likely won't help your case with the sellers if they found out either.

I suggest looking up the owner through the county property appraisers office website. You can get their home address through this method and mail them a letter with your contact info and or an offer on their home.

Hope this helps.

Go to the county/parish property tax assessor's office and ask who it belongs to. You can go to the court house and search through books for the information, but it takes more time.

Property ownership is public information... but you do have to find the right office to ask.

About the break-in... a B&E is still frowned upon when you have no right to be there, so I'd suggest some other means of touring the property!

Tax records would show the current owner... whether that is a bank, an asset company, a trustee, or a person. Check with the County Auditor's office.

Just because no one is living there doesn't mean that it's for sale. It could be tied up in a trust or be temporarily vacant while the owner is away. If you break in to look inside, it's called trespassing. If you are hurt while on the premises, you've incurred another problem. If you run into a vagrant living there and get accosted, you've helped yourself to another problem.

Go to the tax office to get the owner's mailing address. If it's the same address as the house, there may be a forwarding address. In the meantime, stay out.

You can't go breaking into a house, even if you are interested in buying it--to do so would certainly get you in trouble with the authorities.
The ownership of the house should be on record in the town where it is located--go to the town hall and inquire. The information you get there should enable you to get in touch with the owner.

First check out the ownership at the county recording office, then seek the owners permission to enter. Without permission you are breaking and entering, and that is a chargeable offense.

You would be breaking and entering and be arrested. Go to your local city hall and look up the owner.

jean
unless you are breaking into a house to save someone, it's illegal. check with the town hall for owner info.

Call the assessor's office at the county courthouse. If they don't have the info, they will know who does. Get permission from the owners. It might be tricky, since they might live out of town or out of state if their property is abandoned like that.

Many towns have laws about abandoned property, and it can be taken over by the state/county after a period of time.

Somebody is probably still paying taxes on it though.

Take the address to your County Assessor's office and see if they can help you identify the owner. They may need a legal description, but sometimes they can cross reference the address and legal description.
