Buy your dream home and have no money, or.... ?
My boyfriend and I have found the most amazing apartment and have fallen in love with it. But the problem is that if we bought it, we'd only have about £200 a month each in free cash (after food and bills, etc). We'd have no money to be able to buy new furniture or decorations straight away, and it really needs it.

We have seen a few other flats that are cheaper and smaller. They are nice, but I'm not in love with them. But it would mean that we'd have more money at the end of the month and a lump sum of cash to go on holiday, get me a car and buy new furniture etc.

So would you go for the dream flat, even if money was very tight, or would you compromise so that you could live more comfortably?

With houses prices being (in my opinion) about the highest they are going to be (and interest rates not far off their lowest), I wouldn't be buying any house at the moment.

Edit: If it is a case of having to buy a house, then make sure is within your means by a good margin. Now is not the time to be going to your stretch budgets. If even thinking buy-to-let, the rental price tends to follow interest rates, which are low hence high renting charges will not necessarily cover as much of the mortgage as you might think.

So either way, I'd maximise your money and watch for a while first if you can.

There is other properties out there that you will fall in love with.
My cousin was in a very similar situation, she decided to rent out a house, she had a choice, the house that cost £650 pcm, or the house she liked that cost £450 pcm.

She chose the one she loved, the one that cost £650 pcm.
She regretted her decision soon after, she had to work extremely hard to keep money coming in, and because she was a student at the time, she often didn't go out like her friends did, because she couldn't afford to even waste £50.
Saying that, shes past that student 'phase' and now she is in discussions about buying the house off the landlord. Over time she has made it her own, shes got lovely furniture in the house, and most of all, shes worked for everything she has by herself. And thats something to be proud of.
I believe that if you push yourself to do something, it can happen.

Your apartment will need furniture, but take whatever you can from home. Most parents allow their child to take their bedroom TV, wardrobe, desk etc, and most will help start their child's own life.

Personally, I'd choose the dream flat, but look at every single bit of money you would spend, and decide if it is what you really want - and if it is worth working towards.

I wish you the best of luck. =)

You're talking about being "house poor". Don't do it. It's not worth it. Wait until you can comfortably afford it. Go with something that will allow you to live, and deal with unexpected costs, for now.

Emmie.this is not the time to live dreams. Your
dream place will happen when it's time.

Oooh that is a hard one.

On one hand, it may be good to buy the dream place, because then it will be secure and will be yours - and hopefully if either of your incomes go up in time, you can furnish it and make it look great. £200 a month each isn't cash-rich, but it's enough to enjoy yourselves!

On the other hand, it might be a stretch too far and it doesn't leave you much room to move if something happens (i.e. one of you stops working for some reason). Hopefully you would be able to afford your dream flat in the future.

I would take another look at the flat you really want and try living on £50 a week for the next few weeks - see if it's doable or if you really need more money. My heart always rules my head, so I'd be tempted to go for the dream flat if you can!

definately the smaller place and leave yourselves enough money to live and enjoy yourselves whilst you are young and able to before you have kids. you will have plenty of years to be skint once you start a family,

hope this helps

My parents moved into their dream house, the day they were married. It was brand new and they only had carpet in the bedroom and a rug down in the living room. They had 2 second hand chairs to sit on and like what your thinking they didn't have much money left for buying anything else. But they went and got themselves 2nd jobs, to do it. They still live in the house and my dad still does the 2nd job, he couldn't ever let it go. Sorry for going on, but the moral of this story is if you want something bad enough, you need to do a little bit extra and it will be yours.

think reasonable i personal wouldn't go with the dream home. but no one can tell you what to do. talk to your boyfriend and discuss it probaly. you will know what best for you .

it is great to have a dream, but you need to work up to having that dream...trust me, you are better off settling for something comfortable, then something that stretches you and makes it so that when some unexpected bill comes up, and it will, it would devastate you...get the cheaper flat, save some money and in a year or so, you will find something that you fall in love with...trust me...

general rule of thumb if you can not afford housing on 1 1/2 weeks pay check then you can not afford it-i would wait till you can afford your dream house-there will always be a housing market
