annie | Buying a house-- what utilities do I need to change into our name? |
hello there,
We're buying a home in 2 weeks and someone mentioned I need to change all of the utilities into my name.
Does anyone know of all of the different companies I need to call??
I'm pretty naive with all of this, I know, so I would appreciate serious, real answers.
Thanks so much! :O) |

Your utilities would be electricity, gas (if applicable) and water. Call the electric company and tell them you are moving into the house on such and such date, they will just transfer the bill into your name the electricity won't be turned off unless you don't call. Then call the water company and get the water switched over to your name. And if Gas is in the house then call the gas company.
Cable isn't really considered a utility but if you want it then you'll have to call the cable company. |

You don't CHANGE them, you'll have to get them all hooked up in your name. The last person who lived there will have called the utility companies and cancelled service so they'll stop getting billed.
And it depends on where you live - I have trash, water, electric, gas, and phone. You may also have sewer or cable, and some utilities are the same company (like electric and gas) or combined by the city (like water and sewer). Talk to your realtor for details. |

Water, Electric, Gas (is your house uses natural gas), maybe sewer, maybe trash, telephone, cable if you want it, internet if you want that and its seperate. I think thats it, many of these may not apply, but I think this should do it. You may also want to call the taxing authority and make sure you get tax bills (though the bank may pay this as an escrow account on your martgage). |

You need to call the electric company and gas if you have it, plus water, and you need to have phone turned on. You can even call cable and get things in line to make it easier.
Don't count on the seller to do anything for you, because if they don't you are stuck in a home without power and heat until they can get out. Get it transfered, call them ahead of time and tell them not to turn it off but to switch into your name at such and such a date.
I have seen many people go through this many times, take my advice. |

ask your real estate agent for a list of all local utilities and then call them a week in advance and be prepared that they may want a deposit, if you're not already a customer.
Lights, gas, water, trash, cable are what most people do. |

Much depends on where you live, but at the top of the list will be the Electric Utility, then the Water Utility (sometimes this is the same utility).
If the house has natural gas for heating the water and cooking then you need to notify them. Find out also if the water heater and dryer (if they are natural gas) are leased or owned. Once again some things are dictated by local custom and so you can ask your REALTOR about what services need to be taken care of and when.
Many times at the closing table you can discuss a lot of details with the sellers. If you have a water softener, well, septic tank then you may want to ask some questions. Also ask them on what days is the trash pickup and is that a separate charge? Is there recycling etc. etc.
Well, this is good for starters. Congratulations on buying a house. This is a good time to buy. |

Gas or heating and cooking fuel, electricity, Trash removal, water, sewer, and have an electrician inspect your breaker box to make sure it is up to current code and has enough outlets so you can be on your computer and run all your electical appliances, both in your kitchen , laundry room, living room, family room, computers, enterainment centers, exercise equipment, and on and on. |
