Buying a house with my boyfriend?
My boyfriend and I have been together for over 2.5 years. We both still live at home and I stay at his house everynight. We're very serious about our future together and thinking about buying a house together. I'm 21 and my boyfriend is 22. We both have car loans, however mine is nearly paid off. Do you think it's a good decision to buy a house together? We have a great relationship now and I'm a bit worried things might go bad when we have the stress of money
Any advice?
Additional Details
Don't you think it's a waste of money to rent a house when we could be paying our own off with that money?
If we did rent, I would never be able to save for a deposit

I think you should try living in an apartment for a year. what if you buy a house and then realize that you don't like living with each other?

Getting into a big debt like mortgage with a person you have not yet made a commitment is very risky. There was, in fact, one Yahoo Asker today who bought a house with her boyfriend. After a few months, he kicked her out but she is yet obligated to pay 1/2 monthly mortgage on a monthly basis. She was also horrified not knowing if he was actually paying the mortgage with 1/2 of her money. If he hasn't paid, the house would be foreclosed and her credit was going to be ruined for many years to come.
You can learn a lot from other people's mistake.

Before buying a house, you two have to decide whether or not you can make a true commitment to each other. You can always think about buying a house after you get married. If you want to live together, don't buy a house, rent a house or apartment together. At least you are not on a hook with huge debt lilke mortgage if things don't work out.

My advice is to not do it. If you take the time to read the questions in this forum, you will find many of them relating to homeownership and broken relationships.

If you DO decide to go ahead anyway, be sure to have a legal agreement drawn up indicating how the ownership will be handled/dissolved in the event of a relationship break up.

You are smart to worry. A great dating relationship doesn't make a marriage and you're right... the money problems haven't started yet as when you have debt over your heads. Until you are married, set up a contract in writing much like a partnership agreement with clauses as to who pays what, who does what, and what happens in the event of a breakup. You wouldn't enter a partnership business without a contract, would you? Well, this is a partnership business!!! Prepare for the unexpected... layoffs, disinterest, breakup, medical problems, etc. Your mortgage is a legal obligation... get it in writing.

Get married then do it.

Buying something that big with someone you aren't married to is a very complicated partnership. You have to hammer out a contract spelling out each of your rights and obligations. What if you aren't dating anymore if a few years? What if one of you wants to sell and the other doesn't but can't buy them out? What if one of you wants to move more people in? If you have a buy sell agreement what decides who buys the other out and what if you can't afford it?
I wouldn't ever do it. I buy my own houses so it is totally separate from my relationship. We have lived together 22 years but I still wouldn't buy a house with him.

Get married first and then rent an apartment for a year.

Purchasing a house together may seem like a great idea but neither one of you know anything about life. The fact that your boyfriend is 22 and still living at home shows that he is not responsible enough to support a wife and a house. If he doesn't want to get married then you are a sucker to think that there is anything here for a long term relationship and believe me a 30 year mortgage is long term.

You both are still young and you two do not currently have a family. I think you should rent an apartment together and concentrate on saving as much money as possible. It wouldn't be a bad idea to wait till you're married, also.

Don't rush it. Relax, and concentrate on building your savings instead of having so many things to pay off.

Good luck!

If you cannot save for a deposit, how are you going to save for the down payment and closing costs? NO no 100% financing anymore and even if there was you still need to come up with insurance, inspections etc. Read it all the time on these boards of problems because bf/gf purchase things together and then break up, without any legal recourse. Remember if you own you also have to be responsible for the repairs and upkeep. No not a waste to rent when you are starting out. You are worried about if the finances and your relationship if it get tough and it will then unless married you really are not in a position to purchase a home too many unknowns and not enough commitment

Buying a house together is not a good idea at all. Only if you were married. I would do the apartment sharing for a couple of years to see how things play out between the two of you.

If things do not work out living together, it is much easier to get out of a lease than to sell a house.

Best of luck.

If buying a house is too much stress how do you think having kids, one of you getting sick or losing your job will affect things?

I don't think you are ready for this.
