By law, what can a landlord charge for a pet security deposit?
Is there a max? I live in RI. I can't find any information on this. I have even talked to a lawyer in this area who can't quite seem to find a definite answer. Thanks.

There is no max stated in the law. The law only says that it is allowed to charge one.

Steph
There is no set limit the landlord can ask for whatever he deems suitable, you could go to citizens advice to ask for help but at the end of the day the landlord could just turn round and say you're not getting the house. A deposit is usually the value of one months rent, maybe a little extra, (no more than a hundred i would say) Don't let yourself get ripped off though some landlords are money grabbers!

Marysue
That’s not usually regulated. A landlord can set it as high as they like.

Miranda E
If you signed a lease than the security deposit should be explained in the lease, if not good luck

drbarnum
The house belongs to the landlord. He can charge what ever he sees fit to charge. There is no law on how much a landlord can charge.

the landlord can charge whatever they want for pet security. most of the time they charge what it may cost to replace anything that could have been damaged via the pet; such as the carpet, blinds/curtains, etc.

If the landlord owns the property, he can charge anything he wants to charge within reasonable limits.

You can't find an answer because there is none. Landlord's in RI can charge what they please for a pet deposit.

Michelle J
They can charge as much as they want. Having a pet is a privilege not a right.
