No, not unless its really awfully decorated, at which point they would give you a decorating grant. If you want things for free try http://www.freecycle.org

My Grain
My friend used to work housing asylum seekers-not only did they get housed straight away, some of them complained and got better places and some of them got thousands of pounds to get furniture etc.! You're British ey-so I doubt it but give it a go.

If things are still the same as I remember, you can apply for a Community Care Grant.
Everything depends on your personal circumstances, whether you're earning, if so, how much, if you're on benefits, which ones, whether you have any savings, etc. etc., whether you've had previous grants for any reason.
When applying for the grant, be realistic when filling it out, go through the Argos Catalogue, write down the kind of things you need, not would like, and don't go for the most expensive, the more realistic you are, the more likely you are to get any money.
I highly recommend your local Freecycle Group (Yahoo), as mentioned by somebody else too, if you're lucky, you could probably furnish a 3 bedroom house, with all the electrical goods too, with-in a few days.

Hope I've been of some help

Maz
Some council will help you with redecorating, the DWP/Jobcentre can help with a Social Fund Loan, which you then pay back so much every week out of your money. Have a look in the yellow pages for charities that help setting up your first home.

HELEN
if you are on benefits then yes, you get money to decorate and you can also apply for a loan for cooker, beds etc, sometimes in severe hardship cases the loan you get can be awarded as a grant so you wont have to pay it back

Alipatta
It depends on your circumstances. Some councils operate a policy of giving you two week's free rent in lieu of an actual payment if the house is in poor condition decoratively.
I'd really recommend using www.freecycle.org too to furnish it with anything you need.

buggerlugs
not for furnishings our council gives decorating grants if it needs doing not just because u dont like opriginal decor-they used to give money but now give decorating vouchers to be used only in certain shops-thats in lancashire uk

Carole S
If your not working and claim benefits and depending on the condition of decoration in the property, you may be able to get a decorating grant. It's not a large amount maybe around £125

mummy to thomas n summer
no u should try your local freecycle website

onlyme
If you are on benefits you can apply for a budgeting loan which you pay back at acertain amount off your benefit automatically each week, theres also a community care grant you can apply for that you dont need to pay back, i think you can apply for this one under certain circumstances only though.

Ceri D
why should you get any money?

Babyemz
it depends on your situation, whether you have children and are claiming benefits or work etc? if you do then you will probably get some help, their are crisis loans and sociall funds you can claim for, you don't say your situation so i can't advise on this one.

twinkly_toes
if you are on benefits, you can apply to the jobcentre for a grant, but they will most likely offer you a loan (this depends on your individual circumstances) which they will then take in instalments from your benefit payments. sometimes you can be awarded a grant but usually they only offer a loan. some councils or housing associations (possibly all, i don't know) offer vouchers to be spent on decorating materials, but this will depend on the state of the flat. many councils now run furniture recycling stores where old furniture is renovated if necessary, and sold at a reasonable price to people on benefits - you normally have to show evidence of benefits at these places.

stanthemansmum
It depends on the council. Our local council gives a voucher system which can be exchanged at B&Q and a couple of other places but there are only certain things you can get with it. Other councils give a money grant. There are a few that won't give anything and you have to apply for grants or loans.

It is not true that a council will do up a property before you move in - unless it was declared unfit for human habitation before they did the work. Many are let in a dreadful condition and the new tenants have to make the property as they want it.

Ash
this country is a effin joke!!!!

origamimark
You probably have to apply for it.

Champagne
Yes - around £ 170 for decorating.

yes you can but you need to speak to your housing officer to find out more

ANF
Before you move in it will be decorated and any faults from the previous tenant put right. You would not normally get any further cash handouts.
