I keep hearing how this country might go into recession but dont know exactly what this is. Also what is this 'Credit Crunch' all about? what does that mean? lol I sound like a right thicky but the reason I ask is because I would like to buy a property but am aprehensive because of all the talk of recession. |

Best time to buy a property is in a recession,as prices can fall,and be cheaper.So if your going to do it,do it this year.Recession means the whole country's economy shrinks instead of grows.For example if,in your job,if you were first paid £15,000pa then next year £18,000 and then £17,000,in the year you earned £17,000 your wages have gone backwards from previous years and so you can say your salary has gone into recession.This means that in that year you can spend less,be more cautious and not get so much into debt.So the economy might earn £100bill then £110bill but because this year it might be £90bill and so the above principles apply.
Credit crunch,simply means no credit available.When you get your mortgage,in previous years the banks might beg you to take their money,in a credit crunch(squeeze)you might need to go to several banks before one gives you a mortgage.A credit crunch occurs when a recession might happen and the lenders get scared that if you have less money,you might be a riskier bet to lend money to.............PHEW!!! |

A recession is where the gross domestic product has had negative growth for 2 consecutive quarters.
Like say its 48 billion, then 47 billion, then 46 billion, thats a recession. (keep in mind that the numbers used here are not by any means real.) |

The dark "joke" is that if your neighbor has lost their job we are in a recession, if you have lost yours we are in a depression.
The official definition is a period of general economic decline: specifically a decline in "Gross Domestic Product for two or more consecutive quarters.
The US has not yet done this but a large number of people use the term anyway. |

Not everyone agrees with his definition but it's the most common.It's a bit flaky sometimes because, say, the auto sector tanks but agriculture is up. Auto could drag down the overall figures but in other areas the economy may be booming. As well tossing the word recession around can have a "self-fulfilling prophecy" effect. People start talking about it and suddenly they get afraid and stop spending which affects sales which affects manufacturing, etc.
BTW if you are wondering what GDP is, it's Gross domestic Product. From the same site, :
"GDP. The total market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given year, equal to total consumer, investment and government spending, plus the value of exports, minus the value of imports."
Now if you can follow that without nodding off, you're a better person that me! |
