We lease an apartment in Alberta, Edmonton. We've lived in the apartment we are in now for almost 4 years.

I signed our new lease agreement for 2009-2010 9 months ago, and despite that I asked my landlord over and over for our copy, he has not given it to us. Now, when I emailed him, he responded by saying that his files are disorganized, he took a quick peek and it is not there. Then, he sent a scanned emailed copy of an old lease agreement that has a lot of sloppy writing all over it with a pen, and written and with what looks to be a 2019 - 2010 date on the agreement.

We never had this problem in the past, and we have noticed many things have changed this past year. Extremely unhappy tenants constantly complaining about our landlord in the hallway. Other tenants who are not complaining are really shady people, and appear to be smoking dope lots around the building, and stomping in hallways or talking really loud at all hours of the night. We are really uncomfortable and worried these days.

We have 3 more months before the agreement would be up, but we still don't have our copy, and now I really want to get out of this place and somewhere where I feel more comfortable and safer.
Am I allowed to move out if he has not provided us with our copy? And if so, can he try and pull something on us for leaving earlier, even if we give him like 30 days notice so at least he can find someone else to take over?
