Can I afford this Apartment?
Its really nice its 2 bed room for $1600. I make about $3000 a month as a nurse. Cell phone is $100. car payment is $260 insurance is $145. Tv and internet is $135. The website says the apartment is $1600 but does that include heat and utilites and all of that? My sister says im getting in over my head and that $1600 is too much. What do you think?
Additional Details
Thanks everyone I understand now. My sister just called me an idiot and walked away. She didn't explain any further. I just needed someone to help me with this. I am not good with financial planning. Thanks for your help.

it depends on how much you spend outside of those expenses. Your personal expenditures cannot be more that a few hundred a month. good luck.

I agree with your sister. You would be paying over 50% of your pay in rent. Is the $3000 net or gross. How much are you accustomed to spending for dining out, recreational, clothing, personal, etc. each month? Will you still have that discretionary money?
Rule of thumb is 30 - 35% of net pay for rent or mortgage payment. Paying more is what tends to lead people into financial trouble.

To be honest with you, I think your sister is probably right. If you don't have any family and it's just you then you MIGHT be ok... But a good, general rule of thumb is to keep your rent / home payment at around one-third of your net income. And $1600 is over half. So right there, you are WAY pushing it.

You would have next to nothing left over to save and thats not a position you want to be in. I would keep shopping...

Ur sister is right. Your total debt including rent is $2240. ( you should check with the apartment manager on utilities) and ur net is $3000. You are left with $760 to use within a month which can be for food, unexpected expenses and even going out with ur partner. The goal is to get an apartment which allow you to do everything that you do now without compromising and on top of it, to save your money as well (for rainy day).I suggest not getting this place. It's not worth it at the end of the day.

Even if the 3000 is net I would not do it.

You forgot food, clothes, gasoline, utilities, cigarettes/beer, savings....

hmmm... if possible look for a cheaper 1, cos after adding your rental and expenses, it came up to $2240.00, and you're still not sure if electric and utilities are inclusive in the $1600. girl, you left only $760 per month, and after deducting your daily meals $360 +/- (base on $12/day), you left $400 to spend on your toiletries, clothing, cosmetic, skin care, transportation and also dental bills, repair bills (e.g. plumbing) and etc. girl, you WON'T HAVE ANY MONEY LEFT TO SAVE FOR RAINY DAYS........ so listen to your sister, get a cheaper room, you're staying alone, what's the 2nd room for? unless you're getting a friend to share with you then go ahead. :>

i would recommend you stay home with your parents. There are nothing better than free rent, free food and free laundry. If you're so insist to take the apartment, you will enjoy privacy, freedom but deeply in debts. The choice is your but I would also suggest that you get a roommate to share the expense.

last, keep in mind that you're a nurse and NOT a doctor.

good luck.

if you go by the book, most will tell you that you should keep your housing expenses around 30% of your income. Since youre proposed rent is more than half of your take home pay, then you might want to reconsider this apartment.

On the other hand, if you can calculate all of your expenses (including rent), and still have extra money for entertainment and savings w/o living on ramen, then you should be good to go, despite having your housing making up more than 50% of your budget.

If it looks good on paper, then you should have a chance at making it okay.

Good luck,
