Clark | Can I afford to move out in a few months? |
I am currently a server at a restaurant. I work an average of 5-6 hours a night and in that time make $2.65 /hr plus tips. I walk out with between 30-60 dollars each night, usually between 45 and 55. With about 12 dollars added into that from the hourly wage I make about $11 /hr. I am currently working three days a week and so on average I am making about 125-175 a week. I want to move up to 4 or 5 days in the coming months so I will be making more.
I am looking at properties now that include as many utilities as possible in the 400-500 dollar a month range.
I do not know how much car insurance will be, but now it is under my mom and costs 120 a month, but I will be looking in another zipcode.
I am also unsure of incidental costs.
What do you think? Additional Details Actually I am making closer to 150-200 a week. My error. |

Moving out is really expensive, here are some things that most people dont think about:
All based on monthly charges
Rent =$400-500
Utilities=$100-200 (sometimes apartments pay for the utilities)
Car insurance=$200(not sure how old you are, but there are circumstances where you can get it cheap)
Groceries=$100-200 (they aren't cheap, especially if you eat organic, or ever plan on having company)
Health insurance $75-$150
Miscellaneous Expenses = car wash, medicine, doctors office, gas goes back up, get in an accident, need some clothes, emergency
Also do you have any furniture to move out with? or are you looking for an furnished apartment, because those will be more expensive. Unless your living situation is extremely bad and there is nothing good coming out of where you live now, I would wait a little longer. The other option is you need to find a more stable job that can guarantee you a higher pay and more hours. |

A 4-500 a month rent will be about 50-70% of your income. Then you have to factor in groceries, gas, incidentals and your car insurance. I seriously hope you don't have an auto loan payment as well, because that would really be pushing it. You may be able to slide by but the first time something came up that put a financial strain on you it would break the chain.
So I wouldn't recommend it. I'd recommend getting a roommate honestly or waiting. |

Depending on your area, you may have trouble making ends meet. I live in a small town and I myself am leasing a nice, new studio apartment that goes for 415 a month. That includes no utilities, but my utilities go for about 50-75 monthly. Anyway, more than likely all utilities won't be included no matter where you lease. 400 dollars every month is at least half of your paycheck as of now. On top of that you'll need gas, food, lots of miscellaneous things you don't think of such as paper towels, toilet paper, soap, etc. You should definitely save up your money for a few months and work more hours asap before moving out. You don't want to get behind and ruin your credit. |

Unless your willing to live in a dump, $200 a week isn't even going to cover rent.Properties in the 400-500 range that include utilities don't exist anywhere |

Don't forget everything else you need, like food and clothing and what not. If your parents help, I think it'd be tight, but one of the things I've heard is to double the cost of what you'd expect to pay (utilities and stuff) and use that as your "I must make ___ before I move out" guideline |

You're probably going to want to be making more before you move out on your own. There are a lot of expenses that you haven't factored but that you will have to pay.
And the way things are going now, no one will be able to afford anything in a few months. |

honestly no unless you can find a place for less or move in with someone else,
you have to think about groceries, and gass!!!
they both put a big dent in your money |

Well if you make 800 a month and you can find a place that includes utilities for about 400 then yes I think you could move out. but do think about your car insurance and food. |

stay at home, you can barely afford to move out
besides if your 18 and still on your parents insurance, as soon as you move out, you will be cut off
so your looking at about $100+ a month for car insurance
$200+ a month for appartment (not including water, heat garbage), plus they rais the rent every 6 months
then your fuel cost...about $100 a month
helath insurance..if you want that $60 month
Food if you want to eat $100 month
Cable/T.V/phone, if you could live without that $200 a month all together
and anything else you want to buy like doing fun stuff, or if your going to college
so your total payments per month would be
$760+(a rough estimate)
i think you should stay at home for a while, save up untill you can afford to move out |

I'm too lazy to do the math haha
But I just thought I would add a consideration for you- apartments and houses both require deposits. It ranges from a couple hundred to one month's full rent to first and last months rent. You should figure out what this will be before deciding on a place. This is a huge reason why people have a hrd time getting back on their feet or out on their own, because they can afford rent each month but not the initial deposit! |
