Can I remove the "for sale" sign from my new home?
My husband and I closed and took possession on our new home 2 weeks ago. The seller's agent's "For Sale" sign is still in our yard and the hide-a-key box is still attached to our front door knob. We have called, as well as our buyer's agent has called, the seller's realtor several times to have these removed to no avail. My husband is ready to take a hacksaw to the hide-a-key box on our door knob, and pull out the sign, but we don't want to be liable for damaging/removing the realtor's property. Thanks.

I had this happen with a selling agent I worked with. We removed everything after 2 weeks, and I called the listing agent several times telling him I would throw it away if he didn't come pick it up. He never did, so I threw it away. They can come back on you for it, but I doubt they will. It's now considered your property.

You would be liable.

First I would call the broker. He likely owes that stuff anyway. The sign is usually maintained by a service, find out their phone number and call them up.

If none of that works in 30 days I would pull out the sign and wait some more. You can remove the box yourself if you agent can still open it (some newer ones they can't), the lever is inside. Otherwise you can remove the door knob and take it off that way, without damaging it.

The seller is just buying time, she has a free ad on your lawn.

As a Realtor, I know the agent is enjoying the free advertising, but it should be removed by now. I would make one more attempt to call the BROKER, not the selling agent, and explain to them they need to have this stuff removed by the end of business on x day. If they do not, just remove it yourself and its their loss.

The sign and box should have been gone the day you got your key to the house. Call the broker or real estate agency and tell them they have 24 hours to take care of it or you will take the sign down and remove the box yourself. Don't damage anything though. Good luck with your new house.

Once you go to the Title Company, settle your escrow transaction and receive the keys to your new home you should be able to remove that FOR SALE sign.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

On your new home, and real estate investment. You made a great decision.

You might also try going directly to the Realtors office and schedule someone to remove their MARKETING sign.

Just take the DAMN sign down if ALL else fails today!

GOOD LUCK! ;-)

You can pull out the sign - but put it in a secure place or deliver it to them. Send them a letter saying they need to remove the lock box by such a date or you will remove it.

You now own the property. So remove the sign. I had the same issue when my family and I moved into our home. I pulled it out of the ground and put it on the side of the porch. No worries!!! Good luck with your new home!!!

As a professional Realtor, I've seen this happen before. I suggest you do the following:

Go ahead and take the sign down, but don't damage it or the key box. (you may be liable). Next, call the selling agent's broker and voice a complaint. Brokers can remove the lockbox (if it's a standard box) with an override code. Follow up your phone call with a letter to the broker stating that if the box is not removed by (insert a date 5 days later), you will have it removed and you will bill the brokerage.

We've had to do this half a dozen times and each time, this process was effective.

Good luck!

Keeping calling the broker. Write the company about your decision, then keep a copy for yourself.

THEN PULL THAT SIGN UP!

call them several times or send them a cert. letter. Give them a reasonable amount of time (ie. 48 hours) and then toss it. They need the approval of the owner to display anything on a piece of property. Their contract was with the seller, not you, the buyer.

wow congrats on buying your home. I think you bought it at the perfect time. Be prepared to gain a lot of equity as house prices rise! Very good! Always love to see folks making a wise decision.

I would put the sign on the side of the house. It is not the agents fault. I know because I am an agent and this happens to me too. What happens is the agent has a service that he calls and they go and put up and take down the signs.

He has probably called them a zillion times but those guys sometimes aren't the most reliable at taking them down.

You know what I would do? Save the sign, those things are expensive lol! Then when you have a yard sale or something you can put it to good use!

Congrats and enjoy your new home and your wise investment.
