Can I request reimbursement from the landlord, for not having the working phone line?
I got charged $55 by AT&T for having the technician fix the phone line with no dial tone. So, I am wondering if I can ask my landlord to reimburse that amount since they are supposed to have at least one working telephone line right?

No, the requirement is that there is a line, not that there is service. AT&T charged you to start service. Your landlord only pays if there are no lines to the house, he has to pay from the service point to the property. One line only.

It can't hurt to ask, just be polite about it and explain the situation.

I Buy And Sell Houses
You certainly can ask your landlord. Go right ahead.

However, your question doesn't provide enough details to determine who actually should pay it.

You say "The are supposed to have at least one working telephone line." Who says? Does your lease specify that? If it doesn't, then you're not correct.

Second, what was the cause of the problem? If it was your fault, then the landlord clearly isn't responsible. If it was something like wear and tear, then perhaps the landlord is responsible. But: (1) Did you contact the landlord at the time of the phone line failure? (2) Perhaps the landlord pays for phone line protection, and was already covered for such problems. You apparently didn't contact the landlord prior to calling AT&T. If it was his responsibility, then you should have given him the opportunity to correct the problem.

So: Certainly notify the landlord and ask for reimbursement. But don't be surprised if, after the fact (and without it being covered in the lease), he says no.

Telephone, Cable TV, etc. is tenants responsibility unless specifically noted on the rental contract. That includes running a line between the pole and your apt.

Check your contract, if it doesn't include telephone service, it is your problem.

i think maybe you mean, connections from your paid land line to the
main box outside. IF so, I am sure the lease provides for that.

check it.

While most people have cells now, I also have a LL for
internet connection; my colleges forget about dsl service

Loving Wife
Landlords are only required to provide one working jack in your apartment. That being said if it was the only working jack then great send a copy of your bill and request the credit of $55.

Depends why wasn't it working? did you rip it out of the wall? if you didn't then your landlord should pay to have it fixed. If you did then you should pay it.

chatsplas
NOPE. :NO law requires LL provide any telephone service.
READ your lease, does it require LL to provide phone service--most don't. Unless lease says otherwise, utilities, including phone are tenant responsibility.

There is no law in the us that states a landlord must provide a working landline. You can try explaining the situation to your landlord and see if they want to reimburse you but they are not obligated by any means. I would personally dispute with at&t before talking to the landlord since it is their charge for services that were not working. Good luck

Are you renting a room in someone's home or an apartment? I've never had a lease or heard of a lease that included telephone service. Unless phone service is specified in your lease, your phone line is your problem.

reenzz
Unless your lease includes phone service or states that the apartment comes with a working line, which I doubt, they are NOT required to have at least one working phone line.

Biggie @ Arbor Mortgage
Who do you mean by "they are supposed to have..."? What are cell phones for? Who has a land line anymore besides companies?

Steve D
This would be a state matter - check with your state's attorney general's office regarding the requirements of a landlord to provide a phone line.
