Yes, having a criminal record is not a legally protected class.

It's one of the major incentives to keep a clean record...life is hard when you have one.

Hi,
You bet they can, and I don't blame them for doing so. I've rented to four different felons, and each one destroyed my units. They were good for the first few months and then they reverted to their disgusting way of life. That would be lowlife. Your actions are like seeds. Once they are planted they eventually grow in to hate and discontent. have you learned by your mistakes? I hope so! I'll never rent to another felon ever again...... no matter how much they say they've changed.

Yes they can. In this situation your best bet would be to find a private owner, someone who owns their own apartment or small house, that they are renting out. With property management companies they have strict rules that they have to follow. With a private owner, sometimes you can explain the situation to them and they may be able to work with you. Try looking on www.craigslist.com or your local newspapers.

unfortunately - YES.

AND so will a lot of employers

They will give other reasons but they will be very harsh on him/her.

I have 2 ex-felons working for me and both are very hard workers - I wish the other 3 would follow suit

As a landlord you should have a list of qualifications to rent your property, and this list should be made available to everybody asking about rental.

This list would include criminal background, credit reports, criteria not allowed such as foreclosures or repossessions.

Of course you must follow all guidelines dictated by Fair Housing, and having this qualification list protects you. Felons are not a protected group unto themselves under Fair Housing.

There is no such thing as an "ex felon". They are not considered a protected class and can be turned away from jobs, rentals...you name it.

Absolutely...landlords can put down any stipulations they want within the fair housing act guidelines. They can't discriminate against race, color, creed or handicap....criminal records are just like credit records though.
