i have been at the same location for eleven or so years i work alone it is very nice i am located in the middle of town just recently a beauty shop moved right on top of me with three other girls working there they moved from striaght across the street right beside me please let me know if there is anything i can to about this the girls there are really snotted and i have had servel problems with them i hope there is a law saying there has to be so many square feet away from the same type of business please help

Many cities do have requirements such as this, but it is city specific.
They were issued a permit to do business there, so I would think it is OK. However, drop by the Chamber of Commerce and find out. They may have called the business something else, like a "beauty supply store" or some such. Your local Chamber of Commerce is in charge of enforcing the local business laws and will help you.
Go in person though, do not call, they are usually very friendly. |

sorry but in my opinion their is going to be no state/county law restricting same type of business in the same area, now if they are in same building many times a commercial lease will have only one type of shop in the complex at a time |

That would be like saying that Wal-Mart, and Target cannot move into the same block. or that Burger King and McDonald's don't get to be neighbors.. Have you ever been to a food court in a mall?? Sears and Penny's live next to each other in lots of places. Best Buy and Circuit city...
Sorry, but you just have to offer better service, and give your shop more curb appeal.. That often works. But if you are a one man shop and people have to wait, see you busy through the window, They could easily look next door and see they can get waited on quicker..... Where would you go??

The Chamber of Commerce does NOT have the power to enforce business laws. If they have a proper business license, there is nothing you can do. Being there first does not grant a monopoly. |

I have never heard of the Chamber of Commerce stopping another business from locating next to another. I also do not think there is any law to help you.
I think your regular customers will be loyal to you and I would not try to be nasty about the competition. The people in your town will find out soon enough who is nicer and gives a better service.
I think in this case, you need to be the bigger person and improve your business in any way you can. The cream will rise to the top. |

Do you have a clause in your lease that states the landlord cannot lease to another beauty shop or any business that sells similar items or performs the same work? If you do not have that in your lease then the landlord can do and rent to anyone he wants.
In future if you move your business to another strip mall make sure you have a clause that prevents the landlord from renting / leasing to another beauty salon.
Until then there's nothing you can do. |

If you are leasing space from the same property owner or landlord, you may have a complaint with them. You might even have a clause in your lease indicating they won't drop a competitor in your lap like that. Some research is needed on your part. But regardless of the outcome, you can provide a better service and they won't be there long. |
