Partition done through the court system which can be time consuming, years not months, and expensive, thousands not hundreds.
Nevermind I just saw the UK thing. DUH!
But I will leave the answer for US residents should they be interested. |

It may depend on whether you are joint tenants or tenants in common. The former would mean that you both own 100% of the property, the latter that you each own 50%. You would need to check with your solicitor to see what applies in your case. |

ask her to buy you out

I hear this one all the time.
I have never heard of it as I simply have never heard of a buyer who wishes to buy half interest in a property in this way. However, don't forget you and your wife do not own half the house each. You both own 100% of the property jointly. A subtle but important difference which will become more obvious as you proceed down this route.

do you have children? If you do,then she can stay there indefinately until they leave school! If you do not have children, then you can offer for her to buy your half.If she cannot afford to buy you out, then it is a solicitor for an agreement but this can be expensive for you both.Try and come to an agreement to sell. |

Go and ask your lawyer as it's obvious you are getting a divorce and I'm sure they will happily tell you. You are paying for their advice anyway. |

I was once in your situation. Don't worry, everything will work out for you =)
A year ago I found this organization that gives people up to $1500 in renter or mortagage assistance! They operate in most US cities, I highly suggest you try to get some of this money.

Is there still a mortgage on this property?
I don't believe you can sell your half, but you may be able to force her to her share as well, through the courts.
Perhaps she could re-mortgage and buy you out if she wants it that much? |

You will need a sturdy chainsaw with which to sever the house into two equal parts, and a sufficiently large vehicle to transport your house to wherever it is sold to.
It will not be easy. Five years ago, I decided I wanted the mansion turned around so that I could receive the sun in my room in the morning. It was a mammoth task, as you can imagine and many lives were lost. Three years later though, all the efforts (not mine, I just watched), paid off. |
