Can a landlord force you to give him a copy of your car key?
My landlord wants a copy of my car key. His reasoning is that they want to be able to move it if it snows and they want to plow the driveway. It will be about $30-50 for me to make the copy because there is a chip in my key, and he refuses to pay for it. He also refuses to agree to take responsibility if something were to happen to my car while he or one of his employees are driving it. I am not comfortable with this, and do not want to pay for it. Am I required to give him a key? My roommates and I are renewing our lease and he wants it written into the contract. What are my options?

Landlord
I have never heard of such a thing.

He has no right to a car key, only a house key.

You do not need to give him a key, just be available to move your vehicle or agree to handle the ploying of the driveway yourself.

Do NOT give him a copy. Tell him if he really wants to make it a rule of the new lease....you will find alternative housing.

There is absoloutly no reason to give your landlord a key to your car. If he wants to plow the driveway, he can give you 24hours notice and you can park somewhere else.

I have never heard of such a thing, don't do it. If your car needs to be moved for plowing or repairs to the driveway he needs to give you notice for you to move it. If it snows, you'll see it and can assume he'll plow so you can move it as needed. Besides it's spring, most likely will not snow for a while.

WinterStarblade
if he's asking for it and it has to go into your contracct... find a different apartment. it is absolutely ridiculus if he wants to a copy of your keys, doesn't pay for the copy, and won't take responsibility if it gets wrecked. DON"T GIVE HIM YOUR CAR KEYS. FIND A DIFFERENT APARTMENT.

Doctor Deth
don't do it - if he plows when you are home - tell him to get you to move the car - if you aren;t there when he does it - there is no issue - simple solution

☆Someone Else☆
I would say no. I would think that if your car was in the driveway that you probably would be home. I would also look up the rental laws for your state and see if there is any information about vehicals on rental property.

You have every right to deny him a key to your car, no matter what the reason. But in turn, if the landlords new lease includes a clause with this requirement and you say no, start hunting for a new apartment. I bet you a million dollars that once you explain that this issue is a deal breaker to renew the lease, assuming you are a good tenant, he will back down off the issue!

chante
You do not have to give access to your private property. You rent the apartment, nothing to do with the car. Why should your insurance coverage be responsible for all of his employees driving your car? That is ridiculous. He's an apartment owner, not the King of the World.

NO do not give your landlord a copy of your key. If you do that gives him permission to drive you car whenever he wants and if it totalls it or kills someone you are going to be held liable because your the owner of the car. Tell him to forget it if the car needs to be moved you will be more than happy to move it.

Trouble
Sounds 'weird' to me!

You guys really need to stop and think a min.. If he writes it into the lease then it is part of the lease. Having to plow the drive or parking lot is more than likely insurance or city zoning rule. Giving him a key is good for him and you both.. The cost is prohibitive,, but if he damages the car, he has insurance to cover it, even if he said no..

If you like the place and you enjoy getting into your car on snowy days without tripping and sliding all over the parking lot.. go with it.. If you don't feel comfortable then don't go with it.. The money is not the problem as much as the idea that someone has a key to your most prized possession..

What do they do when they mow?? You get grass on your car??

24 hours notice to plow drive,,,, LOL right,, by then the stuff is 10 times harder to get plowed, and everyone is stuck and belly aching for the day... Besides it's a Parking lot??
