it would depend upon what your lease says. if you don't have a lease then you area monthly tenant, and the land lord can indeed raise the rent. but if you do have a lease then no he probably cannot unless there is s specific provision allowing him to do so

PeahiWahine
If you have a current lease with a set amount of rent, the answer is no. If you are on a month to month lease, the answer is yes.

On a month to month lease, the landlord may raise rent at any time after giving a tennant proper notice. The length of time for notification varies from state to state and country to country.

Only if you are at the end of the lease term and appropriate notice given.

~IGG~
yes they can as long as they give 30 days notice (written)

Soleil
Yes.... I would think he could..... especially if he is paying the utilities!!

mommy
If you do not have a lease he can. If you do NO he can't. If you only have 30 day lease he can change it only once a year with written notice.

HECK YEAH...Especially if you are leaving doors and windows open while the heater is cranked...or your friends come over and wash their clothes at your house...I would raise it on you as well...sorry.

If you signed a lease the rent price should be included in the contract. Unless the contract states that your landlord can raise the rent due to utilities increases or other external factors he shouldn't be able to increase your rent

selamaht
You have to take a close look at your lease. If it says nothing about rent going up due to increased utility bills you can take him to court and fight it. You signed a lease probably with the monthly price locked in for the year.
