My landlord removed mine and my husbands stuff from our house and moved someone else in within a matter of hours. I don't know what I can do about it? My landlord removed mine and my husband personal belongings from our home and moved someone else in within a matter of hours. He said he could do that because there was no written agreement but only a verbal one. When he told us that he was going to evict us, we waited on the eviction notice, but instead came home and all our stuff was outside and there was jewlery and other items missing. I see it as a violation of privacy and theft, but I don't know what laws Indiana has about landlords and tenants |

This is illegal in every state in the U.S. that I know of. The others are right in advising you to call the police. The next step is to contact a lawyer & sue the he** out of him.
In California, you can sue for $100.00 per day for every day you are locked out of the property. Whether or not your lease is in good standing does not matter in this case. In short, this landlord is screwed and if you play your cards right you could even end up owning this property by the time you are done with him. I helped one of my clients with a similar circumstance and after a 14 month legal battle the landlord settled out of court to the sum of $55,000.
Google for Tenant's Rights Advocacy Agencies in your area, there are plenty out there that are free or extremely cheap. |

Call law enforcement. If there was no eviction notice and the lease was in effect, his actions constitute breaking and entering and burglary. Even if your rent was in arrears, he has to follow specific procedures to evict. |

Call the police because you have a lease that states you live there. Contact your attorney general's office to let them know what happened as well. This is illegal, I think, in every state and municipality in the US.
Lastly I would take him to court. I would sue for damages for anything lost, broken or missing. I would also sue for moving costs.

A landlord cannot remove any property from a tenant's home. There is a rare exception that doesn't apply to you.

If you were not evicted, your lease was not up and you did not renew or you did not say you were moving out that was illegal. Call the police. |

I live in Minnesota. I know here there are laws that protect renters. Even with an eviction notice present, it can take months before physically forcing them out, and it's difficult and the landlord is not allowed to remove any personal belongings. I would call your local police, especially if there's been theft, and possibly even a lawyer. I believe he's breaking laws and he shouldn't be a landlord. |

If this is really the gist of what happened, you need to file a police report immediately! If there was no eviction notice, no "7-day notice to cure", etc, they have no right to do this whatsoever. Have you paid your rent? Have you followed the lease terms to the letter? If so, what they did was illegal and you have all the recourse in the world. |
