Doubtful. Studio apartment, maybe.
Way to do it is to buy with some one else, pool your resources. |

not right away.. if you save up a good chunk of it for a few years and put down a good down payment then yes. The more you put down initialy the less you have to pay per month. Houses can go for anywhere between 300K to a few million. so it depends on what kind of house your talking about. USUALLY you have to put down 30% of the total cost of the house.. so i would try to put down as much as possible because the less you have to pay monthly leaves you more money for other things like food, bills, social life, etc.
hope this helped. |

Housing market is way to expensive in NYC. There are many places throughout the country that you could but NYC is not one of them |

Sorry, I'm not trying to be mean. But I don't think you could get much in NYC on that salary. Unfortunately, NYC real estate is unaffordable to the average person. You would need at least the income of another person. But I would try to figure out the total price you can afford. Use this calculator:
http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/houseafford/houseafford.html
Before you even look at places, I would go to the bank and see if and how much you can get preapproved for, so you know what you're dealing with.

I would say you should see whats out there under $200k

Absolutely not, unless you have maybe 25% to put down towards the purchase price. Probably more. |

Assuming they are and have been a NYC resident, they would be able to enter the HPD housing lotteries and qualify to purchase a low or moderate income unit in certain developments as long as they have good credit, sufficient assets and their income is withing the minimum/maximum guidelines.
Different buildings have different requirements. You can see all current offerings on the HPD website.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/hpd/html/buyers/buyers.shtml
HPD also offers downpayment assistance.
If your friend has a couple of hundred thousand dollars saved, they could easily qualify for a small mortgage and get a one or two bedroom for about half the market rate in a sponsored building. |
