captaintransit2000 | Can a realtor company keep your money if you don't buy a house from them? |
Can company refuse to give money back? |

That depends on how you structured your relationship with them. A real estate broker (company) represents you in your home purchase. I think you have a misconception about Realtors. |

If you are talking about fees for an inspection that you paid for upfront and that inspection was performed, then yes.
If you are talking about earnest money, the realtor doesn't keep it - the people you told you'd buy their house keeps it if you backed out of the deal; if you don't back out, that $ is applied towards costs at closing. |

What?! Are you talking about Earnest Money that is held in escrow on a house you put a contract on? Or are you talking about a Realtor keeping some fee? If you paid a Realtor a fee, then you made a huge mistake. If you are talking earnest money (held by the Realty company who is handling the sale of the home and through which the home is listed), then the money must be given back if the deal falls through on the seller's side of things. If YOU decided you did not want the house, then the earnest money can be kept by the seller. |

You don't buy FROM a realtor, you use them to buy a house from an owner.
If you don't buy from them, why would they have any money? You don't typically pay a realtor for their services, they get a percentage of what you pay for your home. |

Depending on the circumstances. You shouldn't of given a real estate company money for their services. The only money that you could lose is earnest money if you put that up for a house put an offer in on it and now have changed your mind they can keep your earnest money! |

In the contract it only has to state money has to be returned if the deal falls through. |

It depends- did you buy house? If they showed it to you, and then you bought it without them, then they're the "Procuring Cause of Sale" and entitled to the commission. |

If you are saying a Realtor charged you $X to show you properties and the amount will be deducted from the commissions during with a sale, then the answer is yes. They can keep it.
If they showed you a bunch of homes, driving you around or even meeting you at the properties, why should they do that for free? I know several agents who do this. Mainly because they want to make sure they get good buyers to work with. |

Why are you giving them money? You should not be giving them any money. |

Not unless you gave some-one a non-refundable deposit.
They try to hold cash to keep you 'on the hook`.
If you ask for it back, they must, by law, comply.
If there's any stalling threaten to complain to the BBB and any local Realty Board. |
