Can an apartment manager tell me i cant have friends visit?
my best friend comes over while me husband is at work, so yesterday he told me " i'm goign to let this slide for awhile but then this needs to stop" this is after the fact he said i couldnt have any one come in after ten or before 8 not even my self!!! then he always asks me if i work.. why does he have to know rent gets paid just fine! also had to write an essay on why our credit is the way it is.... theres plenty more my apartment complex is more stick than a fancy hotel i just dont know what is too much? need help advice a website maybe thanks oh yea one more thing theres no smoke alarms!!!!!

i live in california, but also my friend only comes over at like 3 pm and hes met her. and when we got this pllace that was just almost two weeks ago my husband makes more than enough to pay rent, everyday hes talking about osmething we got in trouble for not breaking down the boxes in the dumpster so we did but no one else does so i dont get it . oh and also i have a dog that is allowed. hes good never barks but one time he barked at another dog that was barking and told me that i have to controll the dog because the tenats are compaining but i really think its just him we reallt are walking on egg shells

Those times are legally enforceable if you are disturbing anyone. The coinicide with average noise control laws in CA. (some cities are 7 am)

Since you friend comes by at 3 there should be no problem.

Point out the smoke alarms. If this is a hotel they may have the ones that run thoughtout the building and you just did not see it.

You have to have one, even in a hotel.

Many of the laws we talk about here for rentals do NOT apply to the weekly hotels. Hotel laws are very differant, one reason people with seriously bad credit issues end up living in them.

He's bang out of order and he's invading your privacy and right to a reasonable standard of life.
Go and see the local citizens advice bureau. They'll tell you the best way to deal with this cowboy while staying on th eright side of the law.

On visitors read your lease, since that will be the controlling authority, if it is silent then the manger can not enforce a restriction not outlined in the lease

even if the lease has a restriction, having no Friends at all seems harsh, but have heard in large subsidized housing it is allowed in regard to controlling crime but very fact sensitive on that

Look at what you signed in your lease. Yes, he does unfortunately, if that's the case. The normal rule is 48 hours before they have to pay rent or notify the office. This is under a common apartment application if your complex belongs to a apartment community membership.

In regards to the smoke alarms, this is a safety and security issue. If there is supposed to be a smoke alarm in place which there should there are laws to protect you. Under HUD provisions, if you put a request to have this fixed (you have to write!) they have 72 hours to comply. If they don't comply you can put your notice in without penalty.

Difficult to give specific answers as you do not say where you live US or Europe.

1, Report the absence of smoke alarm - your life could depend on it!!!

2. As you pay the rent you are entitled to have anyone you wish at any time provided their or your behaviour does not interfere with the other occupants.

3 He can ask as many questions as he wishes but you can ignore them as they are none of his business.

4 Keep a record of time, dates etc of his harassment.

I dont think he can - unless he thinks your friend is living there as well - it sounds as if he wants you out - probably had a better offer - if you are in UK go to CAB and you should have a smoke alarm

To be fair' he's probably had some awkward customers before you
but he needs to be told gently that you are not a child
and you are aware of problems arising to strangers coming
to your complex, and you are a responsible person

Saying you cant have friends over is absurd, but as far as asking if you work, I think they do have the right to know that, because every apartment I've ever lived in, the neigbors upstairs dont work, and party all night and have their parents pay the bills. I was a 2nd shift security guard, and right when I would get off of work, is when the party would start. Finally I went to the rental office and got it taken care of. I got transferred to a brand new unit, at no cost. But as long as you are not being unreasonablly loud, saying you cant have people over is probably out of their hands.

after 10 PM or before 8 AM, there can be a "no visitors" policy due to rules in the building to ensure everyone gets a chance to have a quiet night. It's enforced in a lot of buildings. it doesn't usually work for tenants who are just asked to respect their neighbours and be quiet if they come in late or leave early. If your friend stays at night when your husband's working late, there might be a problem...

He shouldn't have to know about your (not having a) job if rent gets paid and the essay thing is even more stupid - I don't know why he's doing that or even if he legally can, but I'd get out of there if I were you! The apartment manager is obviously an idiot who gets off on bullying the residents, and no smoke alarms might not be a legal requirement everywhere (you didn't say where you lived) but it's definitely not safe NOT to have them.
