Can he do this?
My landlord has started charging £5 to deliver electric tokens (which we all have from him) yet he only comes round with them (the free delivery) every 2 weeks on a friday night. There is no other outlet where we can purchase them from except for him. So basically, we have a "10 minute window" when we can buy tokens without having to pay an extra £5 every 2 weeks. Can he do this?

Sounds dodgy to me, what a capitalist. Check with CAB and get some advice and speak to the letting agent if you have one....

Nick P
I assume you are in the UK

I believe that this is probably illegal as he should not be making excessive profit on providing the service.

Same applies to charging by pre-payment meter (i.e. coin in slot). The landlord can set the price slightly higher by a small margin but it is a low percentage.

I would be surprised if you were not able to buy the tokens elsewhere.

I suggest that you go to the Citizens Advice Bureau )or local equivalent) or visit the electricity suppliers website

RaChAeL
Not sure. If you cant get them anywhere else you dont really have a choice do you? Check with citizens advice on line.

whats an electric token?

dixidan_2000
Sounds like the same Landlord as me, I'm sure a quick check with CAB should clarify the situation

Kerry
that does sound dodgy!

Which far flung part of the world do you live in that tokens are only available from the landlord?. Just about every shop I go into sells them. If they are only available from him then he is taking advantage of his monopoly

wonderingstar
ha ha no, but why dont you get in touch with the electric board im sure they will be happy to come and put LEGAL meters in. & bill it in your names & even give you a top up meter key.

ha ha His A55 is so sued if their is a fire due to an electrical problem. I hope you got good insurance.

I believe all charges should be highlighted at the time of letting. You should have a lease agreement to protect both you and the landlord .... & of course this should be adhered to. What does it say about the distribution of tokens?

I think the landlord is being somehat mean but looking at it from his point of view maybe he was being messed about with people calling him up eveyday and he has put this charge on to nip it in the bud

Can you read your own meter? Can you see if you are low and if so make sure you have your tokens

Antoher suggestion is (and this is based on you knowing & trusting the others in your house to get your tokens) to organise a friday night rota so everyone has to take a turn.

Good Luck :)

Where does HE get them from? He has to get them from somewhere, and if he can get them, so can you. He's ripping you off - go to the source and get the tokens from there.

shih tzu lady
And where does your landlord get the tokens from? I bet he's spinning you a tale to make money from you. Sadly, this is the sort of person who gives the rest of us landlords a bad name. I'd look into this further if I were you - it sounds ridiculous to me. Good luck.

Perdita Durango
My daughters land lady has started charging £5 for someone to collect the rent.
sounds like they are all on the fiddle.
I'm sure this can't be allowed go to the CAB, they are really helpful and will contact your landlord for you if necessary
