Can i ask to change the amount of rent after i had signed the contract?
I moved into a house with 2 other girls and the rent that was offered was $550. I had asked as to why it was so high, and it was because it was for the room + garage space. I had asked to knock off $50 because I don't plan on using the garage. They allowed it so I only pay $500. Now I just found out that my room was 6 inches smaller than the other room, and I am paying the same amount as the other girl in the other room, isn't only fair that I would be able to negotiate a cheaper price with the landlords?

you could try it! but 6 inches? that's kind of a ridic.thing to try to argue.good luck though!

You signed the lease, it is a done deal. You may ask, but do not be upset if the landlord starts laughing.

I doubt very much you will get any where with the landlord on this 6 inches. The landlord charged so much for the whole property. It is not his concern who is having the bigger or smaller room. Your negotiation should be with the other 2 girls who share the whole house with you. May be one of them will swap her room for you.

jasper.everstar
6"? Gimme a break. Nope, can't renegotiate. You agreed to the price. The only thing that can allow you to complain is if the contract says you will all have rooms of the same size, and even that's a minor technicality. Personally, I'd let it slide because since you're living with people and you might need to call on your landlord sometime in the future, you want that relationship to be good. Start being this picky now and later on down the line, they'll start to despise you.

deny_zoo29
You can ask, but they don't have to say yes, since you've already signed the contract. But seriously 6 inches? It's not that much space. I wouldn't worry about it.

Triumph
they are going to say "you obviously felt the deal was fair when you signed the contract, otherwise you wouldn't have signed it. If we do give you a cheaper price now, what reason are you going to have next week or next month to drop the amount even more? We are sorry, but the contract is legal and binding."

Did anyone guarantee your room would be exactly the same size as any other room? If not - you really don't have any reason to get lower rent. You agreed to the price for the room- so unless your lease guarantees you so much square footage then I would say No you haven't a leg to stand on.

Lynda
No. In life, everything can't always be equal in every way. Square footage isn't everything. If you accepted the room already, just move in, live and enjoy. If at the end of your contract term you find a better place, then give notice and move.

There are more important things going on in your life to focus on, I'm sure.

Hope you have nice house mates. No need to start out by making everyone your enemy.

Deric K
Six inches they might knock a dollar off. I can understand the garage not being used so they knocked off fifty bucks. But if your going to complain about six inches, your going to be very unpopular with your housemates and the landlord. I say the landlord will probably laugh since you already have a contract. Didn't say it was fair, just saying six inches isn't going to get you anything but a headache. Good luck.

You should try asking if you can have it for 25 bucks cheaper or something but I won't really worry about that little less space.

You need to negotiate this with your roomate actually...you already signed the lease so even if you asked, the landlords don't have to change your rent.

OMG people, you obviously don't understand math...6 inches can be a lot of room...6" x 11 ft (length of room) x 8ft...that's a lot of room that can be used so she has the right to be a little upset about this...
