twnmsk | Can my landlord ask for a copy of my mailbox key? |
My landlord keeps leaving me notes on my door informing me I need to give him my mailbox key so he can make a copy of it? Its to my understanding this is illegal only the USPS and I need to have a key to my mailbox. |

You are correct. A mailbox for an apartment complex, that are keyed by the USPS are maintained by the USPS. It is illegal to copy keys, that belong to the US government.
Its the tenants responsibilty to pick up the keys at the post office, and sign for it, and pay a replacement fee. Thus, they must return the key to the post office.
Your landlord probably attempted to get a key illegally, but being that your apartment is not his/her legal address can not do so-thus, trying to get you to volunteer to do give him/her the key.
Do not give the landlord the key, and contact the USPS. Ask them how to handle it. Your local office may have some printed material about it. That you can leave for the landlord to read over. I suggest you keep the little notes, and show to the USPS--its a federal offense for mail tampering!@@! |

I am a Property Manager and am EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the workings of this....there are several VERY WRONG answers regarding this in your list of answers...
Here is the deal-question one to me is why did the landlord not have one in the first place? One case may be that the boxes belong to the USPS....they replace all locks and your landlord has no legal right to it. I am guessing you were sent to the Post Office to order lock change on the box and either you paid $40 for it or the P.O. did it for the renter free of charge. In this instance I would POLITELY write the landlord a letter stating that you have had trouble with mail theft before and want to be the only person with possession of a key. If they give you problems, then contact your local tenant association.
NOW...if the property OWNS the boxes and the owner is responsible for maintaining the locks, then why on earth would they not ALREADY have a key....and that is their own fault if they put you in charge of taking care of this...
In any event, I would recommed getting a PO Box. They cost like $16 for 6 months and are FAR MORE SAFE than a cluster mailbox that anyone can break into with a simple butter knife. I saw it way too many times. Best advice, keep the peace with the landlord as best as possible without doing anything that makes you uncomfortable.
GOOD LUCK |

Landlords normally " can" demand copies of your door keys so that they can enter for " emergencies " such as flood and fire.
I have NEVER heard of them needing the mailbox key and this sounds highly suspicious. PHONE the US postal service immediately and ask what the local rules are - they can vary state to state or city to city ( any group of legislators can make any law they want ).
One way to get around the door key ( or in your case, the mailbox key ) is to put the key in an envelope marked " emergency only" and take an ordinary key and file the slopes
///> on the key to |||> so that the key goes into the lock but,
it cant come out. Stamp the key ( a locksmith has number and alphabet stamps ) with a unique label. If the landlord uses it, it will be in the lock, or the broken end will be there and a locksmith will have to be called. At least you will know that someone ( since you labelled the key ) was there - the question is - why - was there a fire or a flood etc.? Make two or three keys this way, and give the landlord another one immediately. They can come in any time they want, but they have to explain what the " emergency " is.
As for your mail key... there is usually a main door access key or a panel key that the postman uses that opens the door, or panel. Why would anyone " NEED " " your" key ?
Gall the US government about this - keep all documents demanding the keys, - you are problably in a position to easily go to court and sue the pants off the illegal, nosey, &((^$#@ landlord. Lawyers would probably take the case free, knowing that they would win easily. I am against everyone suing everyone over the teeniest thing, but this looks like highly illegal behaviour that needs a remedy... |

NO WAY, YOU MAILBOX KEY IS YOURS TO KEEP, NOT TO SHARE IT WITH YOUR LANLORD. TELL HIM THAT YOU FIND OUT BY THE USPS THAT HE CANNOT HAVE A COPY OF YOUR MAILBOX KEY THAT IT IS ILLEGAL. |

Do you live in a apartment complex, because if so they should already have a copy of it like they have for your place. |
