Can my landlord make get a p.o. box for my mail?
Because, we all share the same mail box out front and she said she doesn't want to be responsible for any of my mail that may be missing or undelivered and she doesn't want anyone else ruffling through her mail either. So, is she suppose to provide a mail box and/or pay for a po box for me ? It cost me 18.00 for 6 months to rent a post office box.
Is that legal ? I mean how can someone stop you from receiving your mail where you physically live? Isn't it perfectly my civil right to get my mail where I live? What about it? Anyone?

So many different answer, but in My opinion it’s illegal to just require you to only have a P.O Box, if you have a lease to rent the place then you have a right to receive mail at that residence,

Also do not forget Only the US postal system can deliver a package to a PO Box, so this requirement by the landlord means you could only receive packages from the US post office and not like FedEx or such

I am going to agree with the above post in that the main reason that the landlord is asking for you to use a PO box is based solely on the fact its an illegal rental and the landlord does not want proof that you have established residency at the place by receiving mail, hence the reason to require you to have a PO box

Hi,
You need to get your own P.O. Box. Don't be so cheap and get your hiney down to the Post Office ASAP.

Your Landlord is NOT responsible for your mail, so don't force it on them. This is a common practice for people that rent out rooms in their house, so don't listen to some of the knowitalls that think they actually know something.. they don't! Why do you think there are P.O. Boxes anyway? Think about it pleeeeease.

reenzz
Yes it's quite legal...and quite common.

Unless your lease specifically states that your rent includes a mail box...then your landlord is well within her rights to require you to get your own PO box.

krika
Absolutely, she can do that, she's the primary resident..$18.00 for 6 months is it worth a civil matter? That comes to $3.00 a month..she should of told you though before signing a lease.

Kelley S
A) you don't own the house! ..the landlord does!
B) it is your responsibility to get the p.o. box and pay for it

and you have no claim to fight about the mailbox issue. what landlord says, goes.

No they can't make you. Most people need their physical address because a lot of places won't mail to PO Boxes. If she's concerned about her mail, she needs to get her own PO Box where mail in her name that comes to that address goes to the box. It is possible, when we moved in with my grandmother, we got a PO Box so the mail in our name would go there and not to her house, but her mail still came to her house. Just tell her you want to keep the physical address for your mail, but suggest if she's concerned she have her mail sent to a PO Box.

Blue Rose
She owns the property and can do what she wants but by law each tenant should have their own individual mailbox clearly marked - unit A, B, C, etc. You should not be sharing the same box. Tampering with mail is a federal offense, bring this up with the POSTMASTER for a proper solution to this matter.

mykids326
Yes you can get mail there . But just because she mentioned a p.o. box . I would get it she sounds like a snoop

if you live in a separate dwelling then her then you should have your own mailbox. i get the impression you can't have a mailbox because the dwelling you live in is not qualified to be a separate dwelling.

sounds like a bad situation when your landlord puts rules on your life.

I believe you are suppose to have a separate mail box for yourself. And it is illegal for your landlord to open or destroy any of your mail.

Cherishalatina
She can't make you but if you want your mail I assume you have to get a PO Box.....and I don't blame her I wouldn't want to be held responsible for a tenants mail as well.....I doubt she can legally make you change your mailing address unless indicated in the lease then yes you must do it if you agreed to this and didn't know about it being 90% of people do NOT read what they are signing so pull out the lease and if it doesn't state that in the lease then to bad tell her to check the mail and whatever is yours to leave in the box and you can get it when you check the mail....good luck I tell you some people think they rule the world cause they own something......I hope all works out in your favor.

not even joking
no only if there is a p.o. thing on the land your rented on

The probably don't have to pay...anyway $36 a year isn't that much.

alicia
well, you don't want to piss off the landlady... maybe ask if she would consider putting up another box, one for you one for her. maiboxes are pretty cheap. split the cost or spend twenty bucks and keep everybody happy.

Well since she owns the place, she can really do w/e she wants. If I were you I would move.
