Can you be evicted instantly from University Housing ?
A friend of mine got an email from University Housing stating she had 4 days to get out because she didn't register for the semester or else they would change the locks and get a criminal trespass warrant against her.
Can they do this ? Shouldn't they be required to give her more notice than a few days ? She has a small child and no where to go plus she has to pack up all their stuff.

i think they have the ability to do it seeing how its being carried out
but yes people should be given more warning time before they are subject to eviction

If she's not a registered student, she can't live on campus. So, yeah, they can tell her to leave.

Yes, they can do this. They own the dorm, and they need it empty so somebody else who can give them money can move in. Its unfortunate, but thats how they work.

University housing is for those enrolled in University. You have to register for classes in advance so she should have been fully aware she wasn't going to be able to live in University Housing far sooner than the notice. Her own inaction should have been the first indicator.

They have registered students who need housing.

No. She should have enough sense to realize it isn't public housing.

They have done similiar at the college I work at. Why is she there if she's not registered?

Yes, because it is not a normal rental arrangement.

She doesn't deserve a notice b/c she did NOT fulfill the contract and she is trespassing. The Univeristy has every right, for the security of the other students, to ask non-students to leave.

Why didn't she register for school? Did she really think she was going to be able to stay in student housing without being a student?

A University is NOT public property and I am suprised they are giving her a 4-day notice and not 24 hours.

jessica.lanelle
Well, she obviously can't live there if she is not in school. People need that space, and there is probably a waiting list of STUDENTS to get into her housing.

yes this is america or did you forget. where do you think you live, russia?

arathald
I'm assuming that since she didn't register, she isn't paying board (rent), in which case, she can be evicted with very short notice (only a few days) unless she pays rent (which it's probably too late for, and she may not be able to or want to do anyways). Besides this, you have to look at applicable state laws (you didn't mention which state you're in).

budhah1
State property, School Property, For the safety of others, They must remove her. This is restricted property, and she is required to be enrolled. She is a threat to others.

My kid is not allowed to live on state/School property unless registered, and PAID>

You did not mention payment, which I doubt she could have if not registered.... She is trespassing and causing disruption right now. This is what womens shelters are for.... or is she too good for that?

She can stay untill the court order yes.

babydallman
they shouldnt do it! see a selicitor
something is not right, are you sure it isnt just a prank from someone

she needs to go check with the head offlice and sort everything out!

if she has a small child i doubt the university would do that, if they did then they are a bunch of *****!
