boris | Can you buy a piece of land, plonk a caravan on it and live your dream of living self sufficiently? |
My husband and i live in a council house, in a beautifull part of the world. Unfortunatley we are not that well off and could not possibley afford to buy a house in our beautifull village in cornwall. My husband was born here as were our four gorgeous children, but we are not living the life that we want to. A piece of land has come up for sale, and we want to buy it, and subject to planning permission obviousley, we want to put a caravan or two on it, and have a veg patch, and chickens, and ponies, and sheep and all the things you dream about as a child. |

In short, the answer iff this land is agricultural or green belt,is no.If you are living in a lovely home subsidised by the tax payer in a lovely location with no maintainance bills to pay then why on earth would you want to live in a cold, damp caravan? Sounds like mid life crisis thinking to me and as great as it sounds to live "the good life",in this country it is neither practical or affordable.I applaud your dream, but with 4 children it just wo'nt happen! By law you have to have a postal address for all kinds of things and cannot live in a caravan as your permanent home.Tax,benefits, passport, driving licence,tv license, doctor, dentist, etc etc etc.Sorry to put a dampner on your dreams but forget it and thank your lucky stars you have what you have. There are thousands who wish they were in your position. |

I would be very surprised if this would be allowed, always speak to your local planning office before going ahead, it will save a lot of heartache and unnecessary expense, good luck |

as you said you need planning permission, then you have to connect water and sewerage and electricity, but its the good life if you can manage it, good luck, hope it works out for you |

I'd give you odds of about 3000/1 that they pass this, there'd be more than just you doing it if it was that easy, (Think travellers/gypsys) what council wants a load of caravans cluttering up their landscape. |

what about water and sewage? will you dig a well and septic system? those can cost money (I'm in the USA) - what's a caravan? a motor home? circus tent? |

They used to say a few years ago that because of all the bills and taxes we have to pay it is impossible to be self sufficient in Britain. Unless 1 or both of you work then i doubt it. Sorry to say, as living in a caravan you would still have bills and taxes and electric |

I would imagine given the price of land with PP, the answer would be no. We are looking for a plot at the moment to build on, if you can afford a plot that has or will get DPP or change of use for residential - you can afford to buy a house! If you can afford to buy this plot, but you say not a house I would think it probably has an agricultural tie, in which case no, unless you are intending to make this a commercial enterprise. Check it out with the council - if you go ahead, don't fall into the trap of using a firm that 'specialise' in getting round agricultural restrictions or tell you to start a mushroom farm - they are huge cons! I think I'd be looking at buying your house from the council as you are obviously happy there. Could you really live in a caravan with four children? |
|

'Er indoors!!
|
I would check out with your local Council before you spend your money on buying land you will be unable to build your dreams on. Who knows, you may be able to buy an extra caravan, or two, and rent them out as holiday let's.That way, you could also be earning yourself money, as you build your dreams. Good luck. |
