Can you get fired for moving further away from work?
I applied @ an apt complex in PA but work in NJ which I liked and it's 60 miles one way from my job, and would naturally have to get up to leave the house by 6:20 AM so the traffic wouldn't be too bad. I timed it one morning when I was down there staying over at a friends and it was about an hour and 10 min.

I'm not a hospital worker, fireman, cop, etc. where being close is of the essence.

I already put HR down as the contact. Wanted to rent there b/c 9 times out of 10 I'm always going to the area for recreation/friends/bf and it's cheaper to live there.

Probably being stupid but, and sitting here nevous waiting. Wondered what others thought.
Additional Details
Forgot to mention/important:

I have 5500.00 in the bank to account for the gas, and yes, this is part of a bigger plan to get a job closer to where I live, but want to hold on to my job for at least 6-7 months, they give out bonuses and can get 10% of my salary.

Can't get an apt w/o a perm job, can't get job w/o being local to it. This is a stepping stone.

Just worried b/c for now, I need my job!

noo i think its a great idea!
if you enjoy where you live, and are determined to
leave at 6:20a.m. every morning, then go for it!

think about your question logically. duhhhhh.

At the every rising cost of fuel...Ya might consider looking for work in PA if/when you get settled....that's quite a commute! To answer your question, no....you can't get fired for moving away, as long as it doesn't affect your attendance and punctuality.

As long as you're on time it shouldn't matter where you live, IMO.

it depends. did you sign something saying that you were to reside in a specific radius of the company? maybe you can..gl.

Actually, some companies require that you live within a certain area of the office where you'll be working. I worked for a company where they required all their workers in their corporate office to be within 50 miles.

It is legal.

CHAR L
Not unless it stipulates that you have to live with in a certain distance of your job. There are employer's that request that you reside no further than 20 miles from your work site

That should not be a problem. As long as you are at work on time, there is nothing an employer can say or do.

wow,60 miles away?
that's really far...
pity you,
plus the increase in petrol hikes, that's gonna cost you alot.
anyways, you won't get fired because you moved away from work. =.=
unless you always come to work late always and that might make you get fired.
try to stay close to workplace so no need of much hassle?

hope i helped.

Where you live shouldn't cause you to be fired from a job. Just make sure that you are not late too many times - THAT could be a reason to get fired.

Watch your taxes now - since you will be living in PA, you should be taxed at the PA rate. Make sure your employer knows this. At the end of the year, you'll have to file a NJ and a PA state return

Not likely, unles your job stated response time as a requirement, before you took the job.

No, where you live should not be an issue with your job.

as long as you can get to work on time they can't fire you.... but they can use it as a criteria for hiring you.

However, some companies reserve the rights to fire their employees for no reason. - But this shouldn't be a problem for you because it's mostly small companies with one store that sells guns or cookies or something.

Hope this helps,
~Dave

If you signed an offer letter in which you committed to living no more than a specific distance from your job, then yes, you can be fired. If the distance you travel to work causes you to be late to work too often, then yes you can be fired, but not because of the distance, because of the persistent lateness. Otherwise you cannot legally be fired for living too far from your employment. If your employer fires you for living too far, I encourage you to find an attorney and file suit for wrongful termination.

Of course, not. They shouldn't be in your personal affairs, where you live shouldn't be their concern. The only thing you should feel bad about is the pollution being made driving about.

You absolutely can NOT be fired for living farther away from work. So don't worry about that for another second. BUT - if you start to come in late you know...get home late, go out...tired, get started late and show up late....THAT is a different issue.

But no worries on this one.
Good Luck.

Well the only way that you will get fired would be if it is interfiering with your job. I used to drive 70 miles one way to get to work and I still have my job.

no

Not being able to get to work quickly may interfere with your promotion prospects. I'd take a close look at my employment contract, or see a lawyer before making an expensive decision.
