Find yourself somewhere cheaper to start with.
Then don't spend any money on anything except saving for your next house.
Then move and move again till you get there.
It does not come easily

Kevin H is correct but, it's actually nearly DOUBLE what he stated.

I remember a time when I was younger, I used to ask the same question. Now, in my 50's, I ask the queston, why do I need a house like that? Yes, I'll admit, my wife and I could easly affort a home priced at that amout. But, why??? We have friends who have homes like that and the maintenance cost and upkeep is staggering. Many of them state outright, they should have stuck with a smaller, easier to maintain home like ours. Guess who's home they're always coming to come outside cooking time????

Yes, someday, if you persevere, work hard, save your money, live frugally, and don't take on credit card or other consumer type debt, you will be able to afford a house equal to about 1.5 times you annual salary.

Eventually, yes. The key to having the kind of money needed to buy a house like that is to live below your means now, save as much as possible, and invest. If you do this smartly, than in about 5-10 years, you should be able to make a good down payment, or possibly by it outright. Good luck, and start saving your pennies. By the way, the house payment on a 450,000 dollar home, not including PMI, property taxes, or homeowner's insurance is around $3,500 a month.

First, lenders generally figure that you can afford a monthly payment of about 25% of your take-home pay. So for example, if you bring home $4,000 per month, you should easily get a mortgage that would cost $1,000 per month provided you have a credit score of 750 or more.

Second, find a mortgage calculator online to help you figure what size house you can buy. Nowadays, getting a loan is a little harder.

$1,000 would probably buy something around $150,000.

With at least a 20% down payment, you can avoid expensive mortgage insurance.

How badly do you want it?

Options would be to get several roommates

Buy a smaller, cheaper house, fix it up (flip it) and sell it
and continue doing that until you have enough

Marry a rich person.

Get a better paying job

$20,000/year, even assuming you meant net and not gross = $1667/month

Assuming you save 1/3 of your paycheck each month you would have $556/month to save.

Assuming you would put down 20% or $90,000, it would take you 13.5 years to save for the down payment.

Assuming you had the down payment, you could finance the remaining $360,000 at 5.5% for 30 years at $2044.04.

Hope that helps.
