Confused.....
Cockroaches in apartment, landlord-deadbeat, how can I solve this problem?
I have a really bad cockroach problem at my apt. the landlord has said that they would exterminate but then she said they have trouble with company that does it/switching companies, etc etc. NOTHING has been actually done. i have written three letters kept copies for my own files, but then again no response. is there an agency or a company that is nationwide that checks on things like that/fines landlord because I am a very clean person, I have never lived anywhere where there have been bugs and it is very aggravating.

Contact your local housing authority and report the landlord.

just let them know that you can call and send them the bill or deduct it and you could buy some bug spay

Roach motels, there are a lot of over the counter remedies out there. or hire a private exterminator and send your landlord the bill and if he doesn't pay subtract it from your rent.

Borax!

Get yourself some borax, pour it into old jar lids or on a piece of paper and shove it under the counters and under appliances (but not the stove!). Cockroaches eat it, they die. Works!

You can mix a tablespoon of sugar in with a half cup of borax to help get the cockroaches interested but really just leaving the borax out does a good job.

Don't put it where pets can get to it.

Take him to court. You have a lease and in that lease it says nothing about rooming with your "guest" its their responsibility to take care of that area. If they can't their in breach of contract. Take him to Judge Judy.

Have the apartment exterminated and then send the landlord the bill and/or deduct it from your monthly rent. If she fails to be cooperative, you can always contact the City or Town in which you live. Let them know the situation and then, the landlord, will be responsible for the costs. Better yet, call the City or Town Building Inspector and let him/her know the issue. I hope that this helps and Good Luck !!

Call your local Health Inspector. They may be interested in this unsanitary condition. They will contact the landlord and give them a time table to comply.

Document EVERYTHING. Contact the Health inspector, BBB and apartment renters association for that area. The health inspector can issue a citation requiring them to fumigate immediately as well as any other violations within 1 or 2 weeks. This will also give you a valid reasopn to move if you wish. They cannot evict you for doing this or that will allow you to contact another agency and make more trouble for them. Good luck

Read over your lease very carefully. You may find a section in it that covers the responsibilties of the management/maintenance staff as far as keeping the dwelling in acceptable, livable condition. Many residents don't realize that just as a landlord can serve you with a 7-day notice for you not following the rules, you can serve them as well with a notice to address your grievances within a reasonable amount of time. Very wise of you to keep a paper trail!! You may want to consider emailing them as well because that way you have a date and time stamp. Check the lease inside and out for this particular issue, contact a local housing authority to advise them of the terrible conditions (you can find this in the government pages of your phone book) - and consider speaking to an attorney who specializes in landlord/tenant law.

If you want to get rid of the roaches on your own, Combat makes a gel that you can dispense from a tube. It works wonders.

For the landlord, since you have everything documented I would send him one more letter stating that he has X number of days to resolve the problem or you will hire an exterminator on your own and deduct the cost from the following months rent.

Good luck!
