pritzy-fairy | College, flat and a job ~ only 16 need advice!!?? |
hey !
i want to move in a flat with 3 of my friends into a 2 bedroom flat (we're gonna share rooms) but i know that rent is very expensive so i would need to get a job to help pay for it, i've applied for a REALLY good college and am taking a course to be a nurse, something i've always wanted to do. i'm only 16 so i know it will be hard to get a job and do college at the same time but this is something i really want. (i have to get a flat bcz my parents can't look after me in about 6 months bcz they're moving house (really far away) and i was wondering if anybody knew if there were any goverment grants or some way that i could do this.
i'm getting kind of desperate so any ideas would be great...i'd rather stay at home and do college but thats not an option...moving away with them is also not an option as there is no room for me in their new house and i have no other relatives to take me in until i complete my course. |

First calm down, and know that it is ok.
Next get an idea of how much money you really need. Rent, food, clothing, tuition, etc.
Talk to your parents. They know what all utilities cost in the area, and if your on good terms and they trust you to live alone they might still help. Your really young, so ask them if they would be willing to take care of half of your rent or utilities while you are in school. They may even have a contact for a job that will pay a little better then average. Keep them informed, and don't do anything behind their backs. I'm under the impression that your parents thought you would have to stay behind with the college when they picked their hosue, but that doesn't mean they don't care about how you live. You don't have a right to be taken care of once you reach college, but most parents will give you a hand. Even if they will keep paying a cell bill or car insurance that will help alot.
Next, if you are enrolled in college courses, go to financial aid. Talk to all of the school councelors, and look for scholarship opportunities. Go talk to your professors in class and ask if they have any ideas.
Then go to student employment services and try to get an on campus job. Most on campus jobs will be more flexible if you have a big project, or test. Their job is education, so they can't really say your classes aren't important if you are generally a good worker and need a day off.
Finally, if you can't figure out how to get the money you need, consider not getting the flat, but getting a dorm room. You can get more student loans and residential living scholarships if you live on campus, and that might give you the time you need to get a better part time job. Plus nursing school is ver hard, so it may be difficult to work and go to school full time. Loans and dorms are bandaid solutions, but it could buy you some time, and some problems fix themselves for the frugal.
Good Luck. |

Well, there's student loans and housing benefits, they could help you =)
You could always go to a housing office or something like that to discuss your situation and they could try to help you.
If you're in the UK then I think that there are special living arrangements for people who are 16 and under, it's worth looking into at least. =D |

for starters there are implications of you being under 18 and normal housing benefit does not always applie to you. You are best off speaking to someone at your local connexions as they will be able to help you and tell about every grant available. As your parents will not have room for you they can evict you. this means the council have to at least house you in a bedsit. secondly is any of your friendsthat you want to share with over 18 not you will be unable to sign a lease as you are a minor and they will want income references. thirdly the next 2 years will be tough but as you said you want to become a nurse this will entitle you once you get to uni to over £5000 a year grant paid monthly to encourage you to study. good luck with it all I was just turned 17 when I moved out and its a lot harder than you think so speak to your college if you haven't a connexions near you as they will be able to put you in touch with the right people. |

Talk to the people at the college.
They have heard it all before and may have an idea.
You might think about becomming a live in nanny???
That would solve your housing problem and get you some income. |

the same thing happened to me when i was seventeen. As you are under 18 you are still classed as a minor and so would be entiteld to housing benefit and income support. When i go it I go £200 housing benefit a month and £45 income support a week, as well as £30 ema a week from college. It used to give me abotu £125 a week which was difficult but i managed to support myself. if you work you won't be entitled to very much but would still get some i think.
you poor thing, i remember how hard it was for me when i first lived on my own, but there are people who will help you. go to your local council office and speak to an advisor x |

Hiya, sounds a bit mad that ur parents wont have room for you in there new home??....
anyway to go to college and get a job which will pay u enough for you to be able to pay ur rent will probably a mission impossible, I had my first house when I was 15 I got it through a charity as I was thrown out of home and lived on the streets at 13 by the time I was 15 I was pregnant with my 1st child so I needed a home, I was very lucky to get one!!..... unless you are able to get help from places like sure start of the council I dont think you are going to be able to do it....its not just rent you have to pay you have to pay water, gas, electric, sewage, tv license food bills and lots more...not forgetting your nights out equipment for college and clothing, maybe you could move in to one of your friends parents houses? you really need to think about this seriously and consider all your options...I really dont think sharing a flat with mates is going to help you at college |

Your parents are being a bit selfish moving in to a smaller house, they should be proud of you for going to college and trying to better yourself, at least you know it`s going to be hard work working and studying but I don`t think you realise how much being on your own is going to cost, there are rooms for students, you will have to ask the college about them, good luck anyway, thumbs down to your parents though |

Go to your local Citizens Advice Bureau - they will be able to explain the legal situation (aged 16 and wanting to rent property) and what your options are. |

If you are doing the nursing diploma, you should be eligible for a non-means tested bursary of about £6000,but for that course I think you have to be 17.Also they don't like their students doing p/t jobs,as you will be loads of study and working unsocial hours on ward.
good luck |
