Compelling reasons for/against moving to Florida...please?
I'm a single mom of a five year old, and am considering a move to the Brevard County area of Florida. I don't really like Florida, but as I see it, I can struggle anywhere...and I have family there who can help me out. Good info? Terrible stories? Give 'em to me!

Florida is a very transiate state and job opportunities are by far dominated by the service industry sector. I lived in Tallahassee while in college and loved it! However Tally is much different than most cities in the state. It more like living in South Georgia and is more seasonal than HOT! August in Florida can be brutal with humidity.

Consider looking at the job market and schools in Brevard compared to your current city. Having family in the area will help.

I provided a link below that gives census information for Brevard.

Good luck

The worst is the weather, but brevard county has never really had it really bad during the hurricanes, luckily. Also, there are some really good schools around here. I think it would probably be better for you to move to be with your family, it would make things a lot easier.

I moved to Florida as a single Mom of a 3 year old, because my parents were here over the winters. As far as that was concerned, it was a wise decision. I can't tell you how much help they were for me, and they were the best grandparents on the planet. My daughter had a fabulous male role model, and I had people who would take her for a weekend occasionally when I really just needed a break.

The downside...Florida sucks. It's really hot and really humid. The job market is tourist based, which means the wages are not that great, and the cost of living is much higher than you're going to expect. The cost of an apartment is out of control, and your chances of being able to buy a house is slim to none. Property taxes are high, the cost of insurance (car, rental, and home) is astronomical. The bugs never die..they just get larger, and the public school system is generally among one of the worst in the country.

As much help as my parents were, and as glad as I am to have had them around for my daughter, as a place to live...Florida doesn't cut it.

Well for one, FLORIDA IS WAAAAYYY TOO HOT. Also, there are many thunderstorms there and occasionally hurricanes. When i went to Florida its like in the morning its a little cool but then during the afternoon its like BLAZING HOT. Then you would want to go into a pool or somethin to cool yourself off, right? well as soon as you decide that, rain comes pourin down and of course you say "there is always the next day!" well no. The rain continues over night and hits the building reeeeallly hard and so the noise makes it kinda hard to sleep. And so in the afternoon when its REEAALLY HOT you are too cranky to cool yourself off and the room gets all sticky and HOT. And obviously i dont like florida either.

The weather from Apr/May thru Sept/Oct is hot, heavy with humidity, and depressingly overcast. Public transportation is poor so plan on the expense of a car and spending a lot of time stuck in traffic. Salaries are low and crime is high.
On the otherhand, you have to decide if a fresh start, being near family, and nice winter weather outweighs the negitives. Good luck!

i have never been to florida but i wouldn never in my life live there! as much as they have hurricanes i wouldnt even want to deal with the BS if your thinking somewhere warm i would do somewhere in the west no hurricanes there!
