how easy is it, to exchange council homes? i live in north east of scotland, but i want to move to another town, so that i am beside my family.
is it just a case of contacting the council?

there are a few council swap sites. You only need to tell your council once you have found a swap, they give you the relevant paper work, and you fill it in, same for the person swapping with you. They do some checks, etc, and if everything is ok, then the swap goes through. Make sure you have absolutely no rent arrears, or it will not go through.
Also, be prepared, it isn't all that easy to find someone to swap with.

Also, if you google council house swap, it will come up with a few others, but be careful, some you have to pay for, and they are not all that good. The one's I listed are free.

hi.if you and another tennet agree to the exchange you then have to fill in forms from you council and wait about two weeks to do the exchange if both parties agree and you dont owe any rent arrears as this could hold up the move. |

there are lots of exchange sites out there.. i would recomend community council house exchange (type that into to your tool bar and it should come up with results).

Contact the local coincil in the town you want to move to then ask to be put on their waiting list, you might have to wait a while though. The best way would be to find someone from that town who would like to move to your area and exchange with them. |

You can either contact the council or sometimes people advertise for swaps in the paper.
Try the "ad trader" (the yellow paper) there is always quite a lot of people advertising for swaps in there. |

the best way forward to your question would be: visit you local housing office and apply to be put on the register that releases your details on the housing list for different areas in the UK. i hope this answers your question |

if you have a health reason to be near your family and a back up from your doc then approach your council and if the request is sanctioned then you have to find someone in your family's area willing to swap. it can be done but its not plain sailing. Good Luck |
