Jersey Girl- Born & Raised
Crazy landlady?
I rent a room in a nice house. I cannot afford to have my own apartment since nj is so expensive. my landlady lives in the house and is a total nutcase. right now she is not working and she stays up all night and makes noise. when i ask her to stop she apologizes and keeps making noise. i have to get up for work at 5am and i have a very serious job that needs me to get proper rest. i can't sleep well on my most nights because of her stupidity. i don't have any money to move out since security deposits etc. cost alot. She is driving my roommates and I nuts! We have all asked her to stop and since she owns the house she doesn't really care. Anyone have any suggestions, I am in a bind.

no i didn't sign a lease..it's what you would call a verbal week to week lease..which means i can leave on a weeks notice. She is breaking many local ordinances, especially regarding how many people live there and fire codes!

If it were me, I would call my parents/siblings/friends, ANYONE and get a temporary crash pad. Then save some money and move. Once you're away from crazy lady, report her ordinance breaking, etc. to the cops and let them come and get her.

You say you have a job but no money because NJ is expensive...do you have a car you can downgrade to something more affordable or can you refi?

Good luck and hope you can get some help!

doogan
did you sign a lease with her? when is it up? if the situation is not going to change, you need to find another place to rent. you shouldn't have to live like that. try craigs list for other shared living rental situations. it's not worth being unhappy and unproductive at work. you should consider spending a few extra bucks to find a better living arrangement.

The ear plugs is best idea, but since you agree and possibly get a long with roommates, you might want to think about all moving out at same time together. It would be easier to save up money if you are splitting the cost with others, you also say, she is not working? help her find a job where she needs to get up in the morning, or if she is a night poerson, maybe a night job.

By the way, it IS "Me and my roommate" the way to know this is to take away roommates. Would you say "She is driving 'I' crazy" ?
Not to nit pic, but someone else started it, just wanted to clarify why he is right, not just tell you you are wrong. Good luck

Ear plugs

Robert
Unfortunately there is not alot you can do as a legality issue
You can call the local PD and have them talk to her about disturbing the peace. However if it is not real loud noises they may just say she is entitled to her scurrying about in her own home. I would seek other living arrangements. Also just tell her.
"we have asked you before If you continue to disrupt our sleep you will need to find new tenants. Good luck

suck it up until you save your money and move.
look over your lease to see if she's in violation of any noise ordinances.

that's about it.

take care.

Don't pay the rent until she agrees to quiet down, and put it in writing, in case the dispute escalates.

For now, get a pair of ear plugs so you can get your rest.

Yell "SHUT UP" until she gets the hint.

Can you find another room in a quiet house?

If you already told her once I would suggest you give her a taste of her own medicine and if that doesn't work start looking for another room. There's no excuse for to be rude and especially if you're paying rent.

well you should get her a jigsaw puzzle that has like twentyfive thousand pieces.

I don't know what to tell you about your landlady, but because of your special needs you can get a hold of an advacote for senior and disabled services they may be able to help you find a place that is affordable and less stressful.
I am 42 with M.S. and I use these services.

ANGEL
slip her some sleep medicine!

niko
you're stuck for now. is she doing it to harrass you? maybe you should invest in some earplugs. By the way, it's "She is driving my roommates and ME nuts." how could you possibly think that it is "my roommates and I" ?

O.K. its simple, slip some sleeping pills in her drink, then take her clothes and hide them all. Do this a couple times and I bet it works.
