Disability income isnt higher than 3 X rent so being discrimanated & made to pay high deposit. FAIR?
I cosigned an apartment for my 17 y/o daughter (I lived in different town) she turned 18 and eloped and broke lease. now i cant get an apartment because of this broken lease on my credit. and my only income is SSI & as above doesn't fit their rules even thu i have no other creditors

You are not being discriminated against. You agreed to pay your daughters rent if your daughter broker her lease. She broke it, now is your chance to keep your agreement. Trust me, non disabled people have to honor their contracts too, this is not related to your disability, just the fact that you stepped up and volunteered to pay if she did not.

Sorry- this is not discrimination. If the landlord were to say you couldn't qualify because you are on ssi, that would be discrimination. But his policy is valid- 3x the rent, regardless of how you obtain your income. This is a standard policy. Some landlords are willing to waive it- but they may require a large deposit in lieu of the income factor. In most cases, it is presumed you don't have enough income to pay the rent and all other expected costs of living.

When you cosigned for your daughter, you effectively guaranteed to honor her obligations if she did not. THAT makes you as liable for the lease break as well as it does to your daughter.

NEVER co-sign for another. If they need a co-signer, that means THEIR financial responsibility is in question.

You are not the victim of discrimination. You now have a less that good credit report thanks to the irresponsibility of your daughter.

Your daughter was a minor at the time the lease agreement was signed and she cannot be held legally liable for any agreement or contract signed before she turned 18. You are on the hook for her rent and there is nothing you can do but pay it off. Your credit is wrecked until you do.

You are not "being discriminated against." You are liable. You should never have let your minor child move into her own place and cosigned for her. Your fault, and yours alone. No excuses, no escape clauses.

You made a poor choice by co-signing for your daughter. Take responsibility for that choice. It's is not discrimination since having bad credit does not put you in a protected class.

Hi,

Looks like most Landlords are equal opportunity discriminators by your standards because 3X is the going rate.... no matter where you get your income. You may want to rethink your terminology before you put both feet squarely in your mouth.

Too bad your daughter took you for a ride with the co-sign. Now you know how Landlords feel when they get burned by dead beat tenants. It ain't pretty is it!? I do hope things turn around for you soon. Who knows maybe your daughter will realize what she's done.

Looks like I struck a nerve with a dead beat! Thanks for the down thumb... glad I made your day.

This would only be a case of discrimination if this policy was being enforced against you because of your disability, while other tenants were not being held to this policy. Unless you have proof that that is the case, then there's no discrimination here.

The policy of 3x rent or else a bigger deposit is valid, it doesn't matter where you get your income or why you get your income, it only matters how much your income is. You are being treated the same as any other tenant with a low income and low credit score, the disability is not a factor.

As for the broken lease and cosign. When you cosign for someone, you are giving a personal guarantee for them. You are agreeing to pay their debt or contract if they decide not to. You made an agreement to pay the rent, and you didn't pay it, therefore it is a legitimate ding on your credit report. It was your own decision to cosign that lease, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Your first mistake was getting your immature daughter her own apartment and CO-SIGNING. You're not being discriminated against -- you're getting your just desserts.
