msconnie73 | Do I have any rights in this situation? |
The management company of my apartment complex has decided to repipe my building along with others. I came home early one day while they were working. They had my front door wide open for anyone to walk in. What really disturbs me is that no representative from my complex was monitoring the units to protect the units from unauthorized entry by outsiders. How does the contractors know who is and isn't supposed to be in the unit? Also, they were moving from back and forth between several units so my apartment is basically unlocked for anyone to walk in. I am a very private person who always locks my door when I leave, even when I take out the trash. Plus, there is lots of dust left over so I guess I have to clean that up? Today is the last day & I noticed that the pipes are now inside my pantry so how are they going to cover up the hole? What about having less than full use of my pantry space now that the pipes are running through it. I'm frustrated & the holes haven't been patched yet! |

I would put a formal complaint in to the managment company about the unsafe way they handled this situation. Also about the disturbances within your home, and the loss of storage space. But they will probably appologize and thats about it.. It sucks but I dont really think they did anything against the law.. It wasnt proper, but they will play a blame game with the contractor, and you. Saying you were forwarned so you shouold have been there, or that the contractor assured them that they would keep everything safe and gaurded, but it will not get anyone anywhere.. Sorry.. |

Look through any papers you signed when moving in and you may find that they are in breech of contract. I would complain to the apartment manager and tell them to give you a month free or you will have to move out. They have violated your privacy and your trust. |

you need to tell the manager your uncomfertable with that. i know i wouldnt be... they should have given out a notice and called you so you could have set a time that way you would be there watching them to make sure they didnt go though your stuff |

I would be fusterated too! But thats how it is sometimes when you live in damn apartments. If you pay alot a month to live there then maybe you'll be heard, But if you dont then and then speak your mind there is probabaly not much that they are going to do about it I almost gaurantee that. Get a house! |

Every state has their own policy regarding access to apartments that are occupied. You merely need to check your state/city law book.
A common rule is 24 hours notice (if not a whole week) for someone to legitimately enter apartments that are occupied for work purposes.
Also, any damage to the apartment that is not made by you or a guest should not be your responsibility at all. |

I would review your lease contract.
I am sure their is a provision in there for reasonable repairs and maintenance |

Go talk to them......they should have been more respectful......plus they should have given you warning at least....As far as rights I'm not sure....but at least file a complaint or something! |

You'll have to read through your lease. A standard lease states something to the effect of 'the property manager (or owner) agrees to inform the tennant of any repairs that may be needed.' If this is there, then you really have no recourse. and unfortunately, you will have to deal with whatever piss poor job they did of patching and 'cleaning' up. |
