pink girlie | Do I have to give out my SSN for a rental in North Carolina? |
ok... So in January I'm supposed to be moving from utah to NC and get married and move into this house with my Marine BF. Well he is taking care of the rental, and says that the law in NC is that they have to have my SSN. I don't want to give that out because its a realty company, and I have been renting for years and have never had to give that out to a landlord. anyway, now we are fighting and he is really really mad at me, but idk what to do now. My dad always taught me that I should be very careful with my SSN, and who knows who this person is. I'm scared and don't wanna end up losing my relationship over this.
Is it unreasonable to ask for them to wait for me to be there in person to give it out? and they said they need a SSN for everyone living in the house.... so my 5 and 8 year old daughters? is that really a state law?? well since we don't live there yet, they don't need it right?
thanks in advance for all your answers Additional Details Just to clarify, I'm not paranoid, just trying to be sure before I give that info out. AND YES I DO trust my bf with my SSN. Just not the landlord. I just wasn't sure what to do in the situation. |

A law in NC? Highly doubt it. Will you be able to rent a nice unit without a landlord doing a background check? Nope, it would not apply to any children under 18 |

You really have to give it, they need it for a credit and back ground check.
You do not want to live where they don't check backgrounds do you? Keep in mind if you do that the scum of the earth is attracted to live there, your neighbors will be dangereous.
You do NOT give your childrens SSN, the requirement only applies to adults. |

The only way to do a Credit Check is to supply your SS number. If you want to rent, you are going to have to supply it. Landlords have to follow the same privacy laws as a bank, or financial advisor. Giving it to your bf would scare me more than giving it to a landlord. |

no big deal... i work for an insurance company.. it's just a quick background check thats all... nothing else |

YES - You must give that in most states. I don't know how you have gotten away with not giving it till now. It is needed to do a credit check which is required of all tenants. They are asking for it now so they can approve you to move in before you get there. They may ask for your kids too just as an identifier. They will just keep them on record. |

No, it's not state law, but the landlord does have the right to require it. It looks suspicious that you refuse to provide it since its a way of confirming your identity and credit record.
Besides your irrational paranoia, I'm not sure what the big deal is. The realty company will have keys to home, so if they really want to do something nefarious they could just rob you later.
Ultimately you'll have to trust someone -- after all the landlord doesn't know who you are either. |

You don't trust your boyfriend with your SSN yet you want to let him have access to your little girls?
The management needs the SSN to run the credit/criminal checks and to (possibly) verify citizenship status. |

I'm tired of being serious
|
It's not that big of a deal, you're being a bit paranoid. They want to do a credit check on you. You are in more danger of a server at a restaurant stealing your credit card number, than you are of a realtor using your SSN for something nefarious. |
|

Trouble
|
If you want the rental, you will have to provide the information requested.
They have the right to deny renting to both of you if you fail to provide your SSN.
You will find that the majority of landlords require this info in order to check identity, credit, etc.

The government says SS# os not for ID but you have to give it on everything. Was only suppose to be for job with-holding and yet the government wants it on everything so they can keep track of you.Not right but that is the way it goes. |
