tim e | Do insurance companies have the right to request repairs/modifications to your house? |
I received a letter requesting items to fix. Sounds like crap to me. |

They can refuse to insure you if you don't fix certain things because their risk would be too high. |

Yes they can. They're trying to minimize the possibility of future claims.

yes they can
you dont list the repairs they want so its hard to be on your side since you are stacking the deck
but say you have a bad roof
why would the insurance company want to insure a house that will get leaks when it rains then have to to cut all sorts of checks to cover repairs the water leaks did
to head off any future problems they ask you to get your roofed fixed first
as a home owner seems you would want that
but like i said its hard take you seriously since you wont say what they want repaired |

Yes they do have the right to ask for repairs (I used to work for a major Insurance Company) and also when I insured my house they asked me to remove the Ivy that was covering our coach house/garage. |

yes they can do that. It is a way to keep you and teh home safe so they do not have to pay if something seems to be dangerous.either fix it or there going to raise your preimiums. |

Depends on what the requested fixes are.
For instance, if your roof leaks and you don't fix it, they could request it because the water leaking could damage other things which you would file a claim for.
Also, if you did file a claim and they cut you a check to have repairs done, and then you pocketed the money and didn't have the repairs done, then they can come back and force you to make the repairs or return the moeny to them. |

Unless your policy contains an open door to the proposed changes their only rights are to refuse to renew your policy unless you accede to their requests. That said it is probable that the changes they have requested you to make are the results of changes to various building codes as mandated by either a local authority (i.e. city, county) or possibly your state legislature. A good example might be changes (updates) to wiring codes that when implemented would make your house safer from the hazards of fire and therefore a better insurance risk. Another example might be mandated changes to roofing material (i.e. fire retardant shingles in lieu of wood) to help prevent loss from a house fire. In any event the insurance company should provide you with the reason(s) for the proposed change(s). |

Yes, they can.
If you do not make the needed repairs within the time given, they can refuse to renew your policy. |

I am not sure but i would think that they do not have the right to tell you what to repair, but they have the right to decline coverage of your property if it is already in bad condition. |
