SexyArmyWife | Do many people who buy a house, sell it for another , a few yrs later? |
I wanted to know how many people who buy a house, stay in their first house, or go on to sell it and buy another. OR do people build first, never thinking of buying? Additional Details we are moving back home (we are military) in 2 yrs, and are trying to decide if we want to buy and then renovate, or just build. we dont' want a big house, less than 2000 sq ft. and we would live in a low flood, earthquake, tornado risk area. thanks everyone! |

Whatever you do. Get a house that is affordable for you, even if it's smaller than what you want.
The current eonomic/mortgage crisis shows the kind of trouble people get into when they buy too much house. They put themselves into financial ruin by overbuying - houses, cars, clothing, vacations, etc. |

most people are just so greedy that they always want a bigger house, better car... etc. so, yes many people move to a bigger house...
but to tell you the truth... todays economy is so bad that main reason why people sell their houses is because otherwise they will loose it (foreclosers).
anyway, I wish you well with the real estate. |

I know a lot of people that have built their own houses and they are beautiful. It is a lot of work to build your own house. Some people buy them and stay in them forever, and others sell after a few years. I think these are all popular things to do. It just depends on the person buying it. We bought our first house about six months ago. |

It's very common for people only to stay in a house for less than 5 yrs. This is actually how ARMs and Interest Only mortgages becamse popular because people only planned on living in a property for a few years and selling, so why not pay a very low amount if the property value was still expected to increase during that time. Obviously this has resulted badly now. |

I bought my first townhome and I thought I will and live and die there. I sold it and moved 2 years later. Now I'm in a new home but will probably move within 5 years due to job change. |

We bought a row home (complete dump) fixed it up and sold it for a profit... and then now bought a single home and we are fixing it up and we are going to sell it. It's called small flipping- we are working our way up to a nicer home- the 3rd one will be the last. Each flip we make more money to put into the next home. We stay about 5 years in each home.
I personally would never build a new home- they build them like crap, fast and easy. They are cut and made by illegal immigrants and fall apart in 10 years. You really have to be careful because contractors go in and out of biz so fast these days. We live by one where the houses sold for $500,000 and now the people can't sell them for $200,000 because they flood, the siding is falling off and the contractor never finished the roads- it's a mess and a shame. Contractor went out of biz and reopened in a new name and the company is building more house in another place down street! |

Most people buy the house intending to live in it for 5+ years, and expect to sell it when they are ready to move to a different house that better suits their station in life at that time. |

The want a bigger one, a smaller one, a cheaper one, a better neighborhood, or to make a profit amoung other reasons. |

My parents are still in the first house they bought after they were married back when dinosaurs roamed. :-) I don't think that is a common scenario these days, most people only stay in a house about 7 years.
Building is tough, but if you want your "dream house" - you may want to build it yourself. Just bear in mind that if you need to sell down the road, someone else might not appreciate your taste, so make choices for you and for resale. |

Most people that buy a home live in it for only 5-7 years before they sell. |

When the market was hot a few years ago, that was the thing to do to make really good money. But all that did was flood the market and drive down the demand. Those were the good ol days..
It's gonna be awhile until that happens agaian.
Nobody is paying retail. |
