Do my local council have an obligation to ensure that the TV aerial on my roof is right?
I recently moved into a 3 bedroom terrace house (rented from Leeds City Council) and am having difficulties with my television reception. Upon inspection of the aerial on the roof of my house, I notice that my aerial is pointing in the complete wrong direction when compared to all the others on the same street.

Do Leeds City council have an obligation to see to the aerial on the roof of my house? When I lived in a flat they replaced the big communal aerial, so that suggests that they do have some responsibility regarding this... Do i have any grounds to phone them up and rant at them over the state of the aerial?

This may sound bizarre, it probably is your responsibility, but I see no harm in just asking the council politely and being prepared to take a 'no'. They may be aware that tenants have been having problems with cowboys etc, so you do not know that they might not have their own scheme in place with some subsidised contractors till you ask them. Please don't rant, and if you keep an open mind you may find that there is an outside chance they could have some schemes, probably not, but I believe that there is never any harm in asking. I know that some councils are considering what policies they might have to adopt when we all have to go digital soon.

No. It is completely your responsibility

No they don't, is down to you. Living in a flat with a communal Aeriel is different. I have just had this conversation with my local council, as I am chair of the local residents association. My neighbour complained that the aerial was not working. They came out and inspected it and as it was not a communal aerial they are not responsible for it.

No, the aerial is your responsibility

It depende on the terms of the let. Communal arials are more common on large flat complexes or multi storeys. I would reckon though they have as much an obligation as they would to provide you with a digital arial. Worth a try phoning and asking, but don't be surprised if they tell you it's not their responsibility. Hope this helps

No - in a house the tv aerial is your own responsibility. Different when it's flats and a communal aerial is required. You will have to make your own arrangements and foot the bill yourself.

Well I live a council house and they hyave no obligation to sort out our tv aerial.
It is different if you live ina flat as it is a communal one, and difficult to choose just one person to pay

Hello Jamie,

The aerial may well have already been up when you first moved into your property but the odds are that one of the previous tenants got it erected on the roof as it is extremely unlikely that councils provide and maintain these in their rented houses.

This is your responsibility, not the councils. Either you can get an aerial erector in to adjust it or of course get them to fit a new and more up to date one. They will make sure that your aerial is pointing in the right direction to receive the best signal.

I am afraid though that this will have to be done at your own expense.

They have no obligation at all. The TV and aerial are your responsibility and should the aerial or your workmen damage the house whilst fixing it then you are responsible for the damage.

if they are your landlord then yes, but it'll take a million years before they do anything about it, if you have some way of doing it yourself you should, just to save yourself the hassle
