Do we both need to get renter's insurance?
My friend and I are moving into an apartment together. I just wanted to know if we both need to get separate renter's insurance policies, or if one of us can get it and the other's belongings would be covered also. Also, about how much per month does it cost?

Home insurance covers lots of different things. I'm not familiar with all the details of my policy, but my home insurance agent is always helpful. Try visting your agent or a homeowners agent in your city. http://www.usinsuranceadvisor.com/Home-Insurance.html They will be able to help you.

You both need to get it. Renters insurance is based on the size of town you live in and how much contents you need covered. I just moved from Il where I was paying 120.00 a year for 30,000.00 now in a bigger town in Mo I pay 220.00 a year. It is cheap and more than worth it.

You would want to get separate renter's insurance. It can cost anything from $15-$60 a month depending on how much stuff you're insuring, where you live and what kind of home you're renting. It's a good idea to make an inventory of your belongings and take pictures for the insurance company after you get your policy. That way they can't argue with you if anything happens to your stuff and you have to make a claim.

You both need seperate policys to cover your own belongings. Cost depends on what you want to cover.

I'd ask the agent about a dual coverage policy.

When my daughter went away to college, I asked my insurance agent about getting renters insurance for her. He said that as long as her "permanent" address could be considered my house then her liability would be covered under my homeowners policy.

You each have a possible liability for any accidents that you might be sued over. That liability needs to be covered for both of you. It is not just your belongings. Check with your agent and ask what kind of coverage you may want and how much it will cost. You are not insuring a structure so it is pretty cheap.

I never obtained renters insurance when I was renting, but I think it is recommended. Luckily it is fairly cheap like the other answerer's have hinted at. I have heard figures around $35.00 a month. Your local insurance agent should be able to answer all of your questions for you, and ideally they will be honest too.

You both should get it.

It's based on what you're insuring. Like how many units in the building, brick, wood, etc... Only one of you need to get it. But only one of you will receive the check if you have to file a claim. So think about that. Also make sure you understand what it covers. Many policies have limits on certain items like $500 for all jewelry. If you both have a computer you will need to raise that for sure.

You both need it unless (for example) you where married. In our area 15-20$ a month at most. All depends on how much you need covered.
