ylanger ylanger | Do you have to pay rent for a room, if you're not there (i.e. on holidays)? |
I'm lodging with a landlord and we get on fine. However, this xmas i will going home for about 3 weeks so i will not be there.
Obviously i am aware that she cannot let the room out while i am away, but at the same time, should i have to pay for something i am not using? should she give me a discount?
i know i should ask her, but it's kind of an awkward thing to bring up, and i'm not really sure what people do in this situation
Thanks |

Usually you pay rent whether you are there or not. I would think it unlikely you don't pay for holidays or time your not there. After all as you say your landlady can't rent it out to someone else for that time you still officially live there and some of your stuff will be there no doubt. You are still using the room even if your not there. Your tenancy agreement will have these sorts of details on if you have one. Otherwise you have to talk to your landlady. |

Of course you have to pay!! A mortgage company would not let you off a mortgage just because you went on holiday!
Why should she lose money just because you won't be there? |

Rent is to be paid whether or not your there. That goes for mortgage or rent for and apartment. |

No. You might be away but she also cant let out the room as i imagine you will still have your personal belongings there. She is making extra money by letting out the room. Might not seem fair to you but if you were in her position, what woud you do? & be honest!
Its your choice also how long you choose to be away! |

You expect to leave your belongings there, right? They yes, you should pay. It's not a hotel that you're checking in and out of. |

Of course you still have to pay rent, as you say she can't let anyone else use 'your' room. |

yes, you have to pay...otherwise she could let the room to someone else |

This question is just ludicrous!!!! Of course you still have to pay your rent!! You want to penalize your landlord because you CHOOSE to be gone for 3 weeks?
If you had a mortgage would you expect to not pay that any time you go on vacation?
This is complete Bull $hit! |

No, you have to pay the full rent, just as you would if you were there. |

If I went away for a month, I would have still have to pay the mortgage, water, council tax, phone/broadband etc. |

It is not an awkward thing at all. It is very straight forward, you rent a room, whether you are actually there in it is completely immaterial. Sorry but this is one of the dumbest questions this week. You are obliged to pay the full rental. |

If you are leaving stuff in the room when you are away, then you are using it for storage, even if you are not there. Unless you clear the room out and tell her she can try and let it, then it may not be free when you come back - Yes you should pay for the room. Do you ever have friends in, or to stay over. Well they will be using her stuff and not paying, so while she may loose out then, she will gain a little bit back now. If she is stopping in the house, then the heating will be on anyway, so it will not matter if you are there or not, but if she is going to be away, so the heating can be turned down very low, then you could suggest a small rebate to cover the saving. |

Some landlords do and some don't it's really their call.I doubt you will get a discount for 3 weeks unless it's an all inclusive room where the bills are included, then she should be a little more leniant as your not using any of the resources. As you say she won't rent out the room so she's just loosing money because you want to go home. |

I own a home, if I go on vacation for a week do I still have to pay the mortgage? The answer is yes same as with renting a home, no a discount should not be given. The room costs x amount a week if you want it that is the cost whether you are there or not does not matter, it is still there for your use. It is your choice to go on a vacation, not the landlords. If you have a car payment and the car breaks down and is in the shop for a week, you don't use it you still have to make the payments. |

The room is still there for your convenience- it's up to you whether you use it or not, so yes you should still be paying the same amount of rent. What people do in this situation is pay the rent asked of them because they have reserved the room. |

Of course you have to pay. Why should your landlord lose money or subsidize your holiday? |
|

James M
 |
Why shouldn't you pay? If the room could be let out while you are away, then I could understand your not wanting to pay, but as your personal possessions are in the room and it will not be let out while you are away, you should have to pay. |

unfortunatly you have to pay it because he can't rent it |

she could give you a discount.. but she dosnt have it to! but its your choice that your not there and so unfortantly you will still need to pay rent.. |

I've had this issue. The thing is that your lease will probably say so many pounds per week/month for a minimum duration. Unless your landlord is feeling the festive spirit then she might give you a break or a reduced amount.
I asked my landlord and lets be honest, the words Tight, Camel and Sandstorm come to mind. |
